Dale Jr.'s Cars Tour scare—Are we doing enough to ensure driver safety in racing?

After securing pole position at Ace Speedway, Bobby McCarty led the opening 24 laps of the race, outperforming competitors like Ryan Millington, Brenden Queen, Chad McCumbee, and Brent Crews. However, unconfirmed reports indicate that the 31-year-old driver made contact with another car early in the race, which damaged the crush panels on his vehicle. This incident led to McCarty being rushed to a local medical facility for oxygen, with Matt Weaver, a journalist from Sportsnaut, suggesting that he may have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. Fortunately, it appears that the No. 6 Ford Mustang driver is back on track and doing well.

McCarty began his CARS Tour journey with Nelson Motorsports in 2018, securing his first victory at Tri-County Motor Speedway. The season comprised 12 races, and by the seventh race, McCarty had already claimed three wins, ultimately earning his first championship in the series. Although his 2019 season was relatively inconsistent, McCarty managed to build a nine-point lead over Josh Berry by the final race at South Boston Speedway, where he clinched his second consecutive championship. Additionally, McCarty made an appearance in the Xfinity Series, finishing 31st at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2022.

The zMax CARS Tour featured yet another race with unexpected twists and turns. Driving the No. 29 Kevin Harvick, Inc., Brent Crews wasn’t even in contention for a victory until seven laps remained in the AcceleratedGFX.com 285. The 16-year-old took the lead at just the right time and finished ahead of rivals Mini Tyrrell and Caden Kvapil. Just like the previous iterations, there was plenty of drama at Ace Speedway as a caution flew after an incident involving Robbie Bassett Jr. and Blake Stallings. The latter’s car climbed the front stretch wall, before returning to the track on all four wheels, while Robbie Bassett Jr was relatively luckier, as he managed to safely make his way back into the pits.

The race also featured an unexpected health scare, as Bobby McCarty potentially suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that the incident began on lap four. The 31-year-old driver was subsequently taken to a medical facility for oxygen and was promptly released soon after. McCarty appeared to be in good spirits when he made his way back on the track, but the incident caused a scare for not just those present on the track, but the racing community as a whole.

As for the race itself, the stage was set for a dramatic ending at Ace Speedway. Ryan Millington and Brenden Queen were battling it out for the lead, and the pair soon made contact. As a result, Millington was sent spinning while Queen was relegated to the back of the field. With rain threatening to approach from the west, battles became fierce, and caution flew again when Treyten Lapcevich spun on the track after making contact with Connor Hall. When the race restarted, the leader Conner Jones made contact with Chad McCumbee while entering Turn 3, and Dillon Harville also crashed during the Turn 2 exit.

This proved to be the turning point for Brent Crews, who capitalized on the opportunity to secure his third win of the season. Speaking after the race, Crews said, “I want to thank everybody at Toyota Racing for what they do for me. This whole KHI group, Shannon, golly, I don’t even know what to say. There are so many people I can thank, I can’t thank my guys enough. We probably didn’t have the car to win, but I feel like when you’ve got the right people on the box talking to you, you make good decisions, it happens. You saw everybody just wrecking each other, honestly. I don’t believe that’s how we should race, right? I think moving people is fair, but I feel like CARS Tour did the right thing penalizing the people. Hopefully, that will fix it up a little bit. I’m guilty of it myself.”
