That was way harder than I wanted it to be.” Connor Zilisch seemed more frustrated than relieved even after bagging his first win of the season on Saturday’s Focused Health 250 Xfinity Series raceAfter the heartbreaks and disappointment of Daytona and Atlanta, the 2.5-mile revamped layout in Austin was seen as an event where Zilisch would bounce back. And he rightly did.

Reading the headlines the next day would feel that Zilisch’s win at COTA was a cakewalk. But in reality, he was made to work for it. Trying to flip the stage, the driver of the No. 88 Chevy fluffed his lines while entering the pit lane. The pit lane was closed and as a result, Zilisch had to start the second stage from the rear. What transpired next was the picture-perfect comeback story, of course with a few bumps and bruises.

While everyone was fixated on Connor Zilisch’s triumph, another story played in the background. One that had JR Motorsports co-owner Dale Jr. smiling and appreciative of his team’s massive effort on the weekend.

Dale Jr. is in awe of Zilich’s talent

With Justin Allgaier’s title triumph last year, JRM made a statement that they are still the team to beat in the Xfinity Series. With four championship trophies to their name, it looked like they had hit a peak. But, Dale Jr. and Kelley knew that it was the right time to invest in future stars to the JRM roster and build on the winning legacy. This is where Connor Zilisch and William Sawalich came into the picture, and they delivered on the promise on Saturday at COTA.

Very proud of @ConnorZilisch and @Mardylindley and the @JRMotorsports team. That battle with Carson made me nauseous. Gonna be a fun but very stressful year!” tweeted Dale Jr. Well, Jr. must’ve been on the edge of his seat seeing his two future stars battling out for the lead in the final stage. This was somewhat similar to Roger Penske’s situation last year in Phoenix. Had it not been for a flat tire on Sawalich’s car on Lap 60, we could’ve witnessed an epic finish. But, as fate would have it Connor Zilisch would have his crowing moment setting the pace for the rest of the season with a statement win.

Ironically, this race also saw Zilisch ruffling a few feathers. Apart from trading paint with teammate William Sawalich, he locked horns with veteran driver Allgaier. Trying to make ground from the rear after the pit-stop fumble, Zilisch was eager to get back in contention for the lead. Maybe, too eager, “We will have to sit down and talk about it to see what his mindset was in that moment. I don’t know if I wasn’t there that he was making the corner to be honest with you.” Justin Allgaier said after the race.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Connor Zilisch's aggressive style a breath of fresh air or a recipe for disaster?

Have an interesting take?

The restart chaos got the better of Zilisch, but Allgaier wasn’t pleased being roughed up by his teammate. Corey Heim from Toyota camp echoed similar sentiments as he also found himself on the receiving end of Zilisch treatment at COTA. Heim took to social media and took jabs at his rival with emojis, “😎👍,” and well this even caught Denny Hamlin’s attention who couldn’t hide his frustration. “👎🏻,” was the response Hamlin shared on X.

Although Zilisch’s win at COTA raised a few eyebrows, he would be content with what he produced on the racetrack. A spot in the playoffs and a shot at the championship in the rookie season is exactly what his team must’ve planned for the 2025 season. But, it seems like Dale Jr. and JRM’s ambitious run isn’t just going to be within the confines of the Xfinity Series.

Can we expect to see JRM back in the Cup Series?

Dale Earn is Jr. is at a crossroads, and Connor Zilisch could well be the spark igniting JR Motorsports‘ NASCAR Cup Series blaze. JRM made their Daytona 500 debut on February 16, 2025; freshly off of it Justin Allgaier grabbed 9th place. Now that they’ve successfully made their entry into the Cup Series, fans cannot help but think about what’s next for JRM’s Cup Series project. Will we see Allgaier for more races in 2025, or could they buy a charter for good?

On his Dale Jr. Download podcast, he shot down a $40 million solo charter purchase, saying, “I can’t risk my children’s inheritance on some idea of my own.” He instead is considering a collaboration with sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller, fueled by Daytona’s success. He told NBC Sports, suggesting fresh negotiations with possible allies, “This helped me see that I indeed want to be here.” We have seen private investment money flow into teams like RFK Racing, JGR and Legacy Motor Club. And given Jr.’s skin in the game finding a partner shouldn’t be tough to fulfil his Cup Series dream.
