Connor Zilisch reflects on his thrilling debut victory in the Xfinity Series

Dale Earnhardt Jr. team’s rising star, Connor Zilisch, recently reflected on his thrilling victory in his debut Xfinity Series race at the 2024 Mission 200 at The Glen. This win made him the seventh driver in NASCAR history to win in his Xfinity Series debut. At 18 years, 1 month, and 23 days old, Zilisch became the second youngest driver to achieve this remarkable feat. It stands as a testament to his immense talent and potential.

During the race, Zilisch faced a challenging situation as he neared the finish line. While watching the final moments of the Watkind race he recounted, “Yeah, this is coming to the checkered, caution’s already out. And Sheldon was trying to run me hard because he thought I was going to be out of gas.” With his fuel reserves dwindling, Connor Zilisch expertly managed his resources, successfully crossing the finish line despite sputtering in the final laps. “Somehow I had enough gas to make it to the line,” he shared, capturing the pressure of those last moments.

His prior experience racing the LMP2 car in IMSA significantly contributed to his ability to save fuel during the race. Zilisch explained, “I don’t think I would have been able to do that had I not raced the prototype…almost half the battle is fuel and trying to get that extra lap.” His time with the Era Motorsport team equipped him with the skills to navigate the intricacies of fuel management. It proved insanely invaluable on this momentous day.

As he looks ahead, Connor Zilisch is determined to replicate this success in the coming season. “It’s tough to recreate that feeling, but hopefully, we’ll be able to do it,” he remarked, setting high expectations for his future in NASCAR. With the support of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his growing fanbase, Connor Zilisch is poised to make a lasting impact in the Xfinity Series.

Zilisch eyeing redemption at Atlanta after an unforeseen Daytona crash

Connor Zilisch experienced an unexpected setback during the NASCAR Xfinity Series: United Rentals 300 at Daytona last week. With just two laps to go, Zilisch was making a strong push forward. He was aided by his teammate Justin Allgaier, as they aimed for a top finish. However, disaster struck when Sheldon Creed slowed in front of them. Allgaier, who was locked onto Zilisch’s rear bumper, couldn’t react in time. Finally, it led to Zilisch being spun hard into the outside wall.

The impact was severe. Zilisch suffered several additional hits as other cars tried to avoid the wreckage. This ultimately forced him to retire from the race. Zilisch wouldn’t have hoped for a 27th-place finish. Certainly, the result hurts after such a promising start for both the JR Motorsports drivers. The Daytona race, known for its high stakes and unpredictable outcomes, highlighted the challenges young drivers face in the Xfinity Series.

As Zilisch turns to the Bennett 250, he is eager to put the crash behind him and showcase his skills. With the lessons learned from Daytona fresh in his mind, Zilisch is determined to capitalize on his potential and prove that his earlier victory was no fluke. With a debut in the Cup Series at Circuit of The Americas next month, Zilisch is already climbing the ranks. He’s proving authoritatively that he’s a force to be reckoned with in the racing world.
