It has been over seven years since Dale Earnhardt Jr hung up his firesuit. However, the memories linger, and so do the habits. As a race car driver, Dale Jr was dedicated to NASCAR Cup Series racing. He sometimes won races in the craziest ways possible, like the intense fuel mileage race at Michigan in 2008. As it turns out, Dale Jr has translated some of his crazy habits outside the racetrack as well.
Amy Earnhardt and Dale Jr. have been married since 2016, and they have two lovely daughters. Yet even amidst this happy family, small disagreements do arise from time to time—notably about Dale Jr.’s superbly eccentric lifestyle. That has driven his wife Amy to share a small story on their podcast.

The Earnhardt couple struck their roots back in 2009. Amy Reimann was an interior designer and came on a project to design Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Kannapolis home. From there their love bloomed into something beautiful – yet certain fissures existed. For example, Dale Jr. would spend a whole week hanging out with his friends while delaying quality time with Amy. The couple addressed such issues by consulting a therapist – and their bond grew stronger than ever. While they have passed those tests, certain quirky habits of Dale Jr still persist in the household, nagging Amy.
On their recently released podcast, ‘Bless Your Hardt’, the couple launched another episode of being honest with each other. Amy Earnhardt revealed to Dale Earnhardt Jr. the habit that got on her nerves. “If I’m sitting next to you and you’re eating snacks after dinner or something, I’ll look over ’cause when you finish you’re gonna go,” she motioned as if she was rubbing off crumbs from her pants, “all over the floor. This is not the f**** trash can. The world is not your trash can. What the hell? What’s going on?” Yet the answer that Dale Jr had for this made Amy’s jaws drop – and is sure to baffle you as well.
Dale Earnhardt Jr let slip a wild routine that he used to follow before he met the love of his life. “I lived my life one way for all these years, and then you came into it. Every day, I ate one big meal right around two o’clock…I slept till two, I’d get up, I’d go ‘Ugh, I’m hungry.’ I always was ordering out, somebody’d bring the food, I’d eat it. And then I’d get on the computer until five in the morning, playing video games – eating nothing, smoking cigarettes, and drinking AMP energy…Then I would go to bed, and do the whole thing the next day.” Amy let out a gasp, “Lord have mercy.”

The Earnhardt household is no stranger to wild stories. Dale Earnhardt Sr. or the Intimidator, did not have a driving license until he was well into his 30s. Similarly, his son also has a crazy story to tell, on account of his hectic career. In 2008, Dale Jr had to let go of his familial team, Dale Earnhardt Inc. and joined Hendrick Motorsports. Being part of the premier race team hosting legends like Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon may have been a bit taxing. However, Dale Jr. had the best and most unique way to ‘let off steam’ – he drank and smoked cigarettes during weekdays.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. admitted to his odd lifestyle last year. “I’d go party with my buddies or something or have friends over on a Tuesday night and we’d damn kick ass on the race weekend. I was like, ‘Maybe I’m just one of the old guards man. I need to drink and smoke cigarettes and go kick a–.'” Although he tried to revamp his lifestyle on insistence from his team members, Dale Jr. admitted that did not really help him focus on races. “I’m gonna lose some weight, I’m gonna work out. I’m gonna do these new things to try and be in better physical shape and better mental shape. I would abstain from drinking or something for a couple of weeks and the results didn’t change for me.”

It was during one such phase of Junior’s life before Amy met Junior when he met another driver, Martin Truex Jr. Dale Jr. had hit it off in racing and MTJ was a rookie looking to make his mark in NASCAR. That’s when the two worlds came together. MTJ began living with Junior in his house, and they quickly bonded over their love of video games.
Reliving the days, Junior said, “I bought four identical computers, and a year goes down the road; all that crap is obsolete. Four brand-new computers come back in the house; we’re in there upgrading, updating, installing; everybody’s got a wheel. I mean, we had it set up. We had a lot of fun; we raced all night long, slept all day, ate junk, drank beer, and he drank Captain; that’s his drink; he’s a Captain Morgan guy.”
Now, it wasn’t just the games or drinking that won Dale Jr.’s admiration. MTJ was a serious racer, and it showed in his results. He won the Xfinity Series back-to-back, in 2004 and in 2005, working alongside Dale Jr. As a result, it remains an interesting part of Dale Jr’s life.
