Was Treyten Lapcevich's reprimand justified, or is this just another case of unfair NASCAR politics?

“I thought it was over, honestly,” quipped a Canadian racer emotionally, after almost skidding into a wall in North Wilkesboro. Treyten Lapcevich is competing in the US for the first time this year, trying his hand at Dale Earnhardt Jr‘s CARS Tour. And he struck gold in his 11th start – winning the August 3rd zMAX CARS race. But soon he got to know it was actually over for him.

Two days after celebrating at Victory Lane, Treyten Lapcevich’s victory was stripped due to a technical mishap, costing him his newfound glory. The young driver vehemently protested the decision. After nearly two weeks, CARS Tour officials have finally shown him some respite.

Well, maybe not halfway, but progress is still progress. The Window World 125 race was chaotic as it is – Treyten Lapcevich navigated his way through several obstacles. A rain delay and several wrecks stuttered his progress, especially the leaking fuel due to which his No. 77 car almost skidded off to the wall. But even after posing with his trophy, Dale Earnhardt Jr’s series confiscated the win. An unregulated auto part was discovered in his car, and dismay crashed on the Chad Bryant Racing team.

Lapcevich and his team appealed against the penalty, and put strong messages on social media. This drew the attention of fans and Dale Earnhardt Jr himself. Two weeks later, the appeals board published their verdict, as updated by journalist Matt Weaver. “CARS Tour appeal results: Treyten Lapcevich and Chad Bryant Racing has been reinstated as winners of the race at North Wilkesboro but will not receive points or prize money. The panel consisted of David Hoots, Kevin Powell and Brandon Brown.”

This comes as a partial relief to the CBR team and the 20-year-old Grimsby, Ontario native. Lapcevich’s win at North Wilkesboro Speedway was grand, to say the least. Although Dale Earnhardt Jr. was not participating, another CARS Tour owner and 60-time Cup winner, Kevin Harvick, was among Treyten Lapcevich’s rivals. Xfinity Series regulars Brandon Jones and Sammy Smith were also present in the crowd. On the final lap, Lapcevich skillfully held off Truck Series leader Corey Heim to secure the win.

So clearly, this win was special for Lapcevich, and retaining it goes a long way. Even one of the judicial officials of CARS Tour acknowledged the verdict.

Now as Lapcevich reaps the benefits of the appeals board verdict, Childress could not help but acknowledge it. “We understand and accept the decision made this afternoon by the Appeals board. We appreciate the time and effort given by the board to hear this appeal and we understand that there is a need on our part to continue to work on our processes and procedures as we grow as a sanctioning body.”
