Dale Earnhardt Jr’s Xfinity Star Takes a Dig at JGR’s “Weird” Duo Amidst Back to Back Season Heartbreaks

Another Xfinity race and another week of disappointment for JR Motorsports prodigy Sam Mayer. After an impeccable 2023 season, the 2024 Xfinity season has been nothing but a heap of heartbreak for the driver. The Chevrolet driver is yet to punch a card in the scoreboard after four races into the season. The driver’s dejection persisted on Saturday’s race in Phoenix, as the chances of scoring his first favorable finish were cut short by the shenanigans of the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers. Caught in a massive wreck, Mayer, for the fourth time in the season, had to let go of his aspirations thanks to fellow drivers. As a result, the driver lashed out at the racers who initiated the wreck in his post-race interview.

Although Sam Mayer had the occasion of earning a favorable position in the race, the Big One occurred in the final stage with just 57 laps to go during a restart. The incident occurred when Joe Gibbs Racing driver Chandler Smith ran into his teammate John Hunter Nemechek. Although the contact was minor, it was enough to set the whole track in upheaval and involve close to a dozen innocent drivers, including Sam Mayer. Owing to this, the JR Motorsports driver lashed out at the JGR duo.

Speaking about the wreck that occurred, Mayer also stated, “I mean we had two teammates packing air for no reason, just put each other in a bad spot. Really weird, but that’s just a part of it. People race really hard and think that it is their only chance to win a race and get it done early. People have a lot to prove this year including myself. I am not gonna admit that but I wanted to do something big here. This is the year to prove that. I gotta get my craft together, you gotta be leader of the race if I am not gonna get wrecked. I can be better, team can be better..”

However, what stood out the most in the commotion was the gestures that Mayer made after unstrapping himself from the car. When asked about the significance of those gestures, the driver jokingly added, “It is just a part of the gig, like I am not gonna be pissed about it. There is no real reason for being mad about it when you are not doing anything wrong.”

It was not just Sam Mayer who was taken by surprise during the carnage, but also John Hunter Nemechek who led the field to wreak havoc and led to the red flagging of the race. 

The driver himself was unsure how things unfolded and escalated to an exponential level. He accepted the fact that he perceived that Smith had tapped him on the left rear, which eventually led the driver to spin in the middle of the incoming traffic. Speaking about the wreck, the driver stated, “Just Phoenix restarts. Restarts are crazy here. Getting three wide, four wide, two wide, doesn’t really matter. Restarts are just nuts here with the dogleg and sometimes you’re in the wrong spot at the wrong time.”

“I mean, I am sure we will have conversations on Monday about just the whole situation and whatnot but now that I’m out. The only goal is to go in, so. Now all the focus is for tomorrow, we have a really good #42 Toyota Camry XSE so gotta figure out how to drive from 19th to the front,” Nemechek concluded.

Nevertheless, with the oval course race coming to a pause for two weeks as the series’ next schedule moves to COTA, the first road course race of the season, it will be interesting to see how Sam Mayer is able to fare on the road track.
