Dale Earnhardt Jr is arguably the most popular NASCAR driver of this century, being the fans’ favorite for a record 15 consecutive times. Not only is he popular and adored by the racing community, but the retired veteran is also a consummate professional and a genius with boundless knowledge about the technicalities of the sport.

Recently, Dale Jr came out with a startling comment following the short-track action at Richmond, with suggestions to make the race more engaging and competitive. And guess what, NASCAR’s controversialist, Denny Hamlin has something to say about it.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver strongly opposed the idea, making Dale Jr return fire with a simple yet resounding tweet.

Cook-Out 400 at the 0.75-mile short track was a great race but not everyone’s cup of tea. Compared to last week’s eventful race at Pocono Raceway, the short track package was a bit dull for many spectators. The winner Chris Buescher‘s #17 Ford was miles ahead of the rest, even leading Hamlin with a whopping 6-second gap during the final laps.

Chris Buescher was just meters away from lapping Chase Elliott but decided not to, yet again making a strong statement not to underestimate the Fords. While the race brought the Texas native his first win of the season, Pocono winner and NASCAR’s latest villain, Denny Hamlin finished second.

Following the race, Dale Jr voiced his opinion to make the race more engaging for the fans. He suggested the usage of resin so that the field gets more lively with every car being super sticky to the tarmac, offering more thrill and excitement. However, Hamlin on the Action Detrimental podcast, a production of Dirty Mo Media, owned by Dale Jr himself, chimed in with his take on the race.

When asked, “You did respond to Dale Jr on Twitter, he said the top groove looks like you need some resin. Isn’t that just a Band-Aid?” by his co-host Jared Allen, Hamlin said, “Oh, god, yuck.” He then clarified to Allen, saying, “It is, and now, you know what happened was we would all be running in a train up against the wall and nobody would see us all day.” 

But the JR Motorsports co-owner had something up his sleeve, the 48-year-old came up with a 3-word response for Hamlin as he sent out a tweet, saying, “I podcast tomorrow,” with an “unimpressed” emoji at the end.

As mentioned above, the race itself wasn’t much eventful compared to the Pocono race that saw Hamlin’s fiasco with his friend Kyle Larson. But Sunday’s Cook Out 400 wasn’t an outright dull race either. While the Fords reigned victorious at Richmond, the organization’s most winningest teams fell off the radar with HMS getting the worst of it—all 4 HMS Chevys missed the top 10.

Taking this into consideration, Dale Jr suggested using resin, which could possibly improve traction, making the race all the more competitive. But Hamlin opposed the idea using a great analogy, citing the new and improved race cars we have nowadays.

He said, “I know what he’s trying to say and we’re trying to replicate the days of the sealer but we don’t have the same cars as what we had when sealer was around, and what I’m trying to say is that when they paved Richmond, man this was before my day, this was early 2000s or maybe it was late ’90s. They then put sealer on it afterwards and so there was a lot of grip in the sealer so as the cars ran one line, they wore the sealer off then they kept moving up the racetrack to chase more sealer, it was almost like resin but again the cars were different.” 

Furthermore, Hamlin concluded his take by saying, “So what we did if you put up one lane of resin around the race track, we’re gonna run in that one lane around in a train and its just, it would not, I just don’t think it would work.”
