If you think NASCAR legends Ken Schrader and Dale Earnhardt Jr. only swap stories about their racing days, think again! Their relationship is a lot more colorful—and recently, Ken Schrader revealed an instance where it took a hilarious turn that Dale Jr. never saw coming. Schrader, always the life of the party with his laid-back, witty charm, dropped a story on his show, Herm & Schrader, with Kenny Wallace that left everyone in stitches. Let’s just say it involved a desperate call for… vodka.
A boozy SOS
So here’s how it all went down: Schrader and his wife, Ann, were having a fun, laid-back day in Virginia, enjoying some good times and good drinks when—disaster struck—they ran out of High Rock Vodka. For context, High Rock is Dale Earnhardt Jr. and their wife Amy Earnhardt’s handcrafted vodka, co-created in collaboration with Sugarlands Distilling Company. Schrader, never one to panic, picked up the phone and dialed up none other than Dale Jr. himself. But it wasn’t exactly a call for emergency funds or urgent racing advice.

“We called Dale Jr. a couple years ago. We were doing play days out in Virginia and called him up and said we got a problem,” Schrader recounted with a laugh. Now, you can imagine Dale Jr. on the other end of the line, probably expecting a crisis of epic NASCAR proportions. Instead, Schrader hit him with this gem: “Well, we’re up here in Virginia, Ann’s out of vodka.”
You could practically hear the bewilderment on Dale Jr.’s end when he shot back, “That’s your problem?!” Schrader explained how Earnhardt Jr. was ready to pull out all the stops, thinking he needed to send a plane for money or supplies, only to find out it was just about restocking the vodka. Schrader’s punchline? “Now, we don’t need it tonight. But we’re gonna need it pretty quick,” he joked, sending Kenny Wallace into fits of laughter on their Dirty Mo Media show.

This story is just classic Schrader—always ready to crack a joke, never taking life too seriously, and constantly keeping things entertaining. Whether on the track or off, Schrader’s fun-loving attitude is exactly why he’s such a beloved figure in the sport. Wallace, riding the wave of Schrader’s infectious humor, even quipped about needing more vodka sponsors for the show, continuing the giggles.
But beyond the laughs, this vodka story shows the kind of friendship Schrader and Dale Earnhardt Jr. share. Schrader, who was good friends with the late great Dale Earnhardt Sr., naturally extended that bond to Dale Jr., becoming a beloved figure in the Earnhardt circle. Despite coming from different NASCAR eras, the two have always clicked—bonding over their mutual respect for racing and all the craziness that comes with it.
