It just wasn’t his day. Connor Zilisch has had the NASCAR world at his feet ever since the youngster made his debut in the Xfinity Series last year. After securing a triumph in his very first race at Watkins Glen, the racer has carried forward that momentum this year to win at the Circuit of the Americas with JR Motorsports. While the result at Phonix Raceway was less than ideal (P16), the 18-year-old hoped to get back to winning ways at the 2025 The LiUNA! at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as planned.

It’s a testament to just how talented Connor Zilisch is that young racer is expected to compete for wins every time he steps on the track. However, even the best get it wrong sometimes, a lesson the North Carolina native had to learn the hard way at ‘the Diamond in the Desert.’

Connor Zilisch takes responsibility for Sin City heartbreak

Expectations were high from Connor Zilisch. Widely hailed as a ‘generational talent,’ the JR Motorsports driver has set the NASCAR world alight since making his debut in 2024. With two wins in nine Xfinity Series appearances, the numbers speak for themselves, and the North Carolina native is already establishing his reputation as a fierce competitor on the track. Even though it was his first appearance at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the teenager didn’t disappoint, qualifying in third place ahead of the race.

However, things didn’t quite work out at the 1.5-mile oval. The youngster incurred a speeding penalty during his final pit stop, relegating him to ninth place in Vegas after running in the top 5 for most of the race. Reflecting on the result, Connor Zilisch told FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass, “Just, we had such a good car. We fired off so good. We started to get a little bit tight but, yeah, just ended my day for myself and my team.” Looking back at the incident, he said, “Yeah, it was the first section. I thought I was under. I must have been looking at the wrong line or something. I did think I was under.”

While securing a top-ten finish in Las Vegas isn’t the worst outcome, Zilisch will be leaving Sin City with a bitter taste in his mouth. The 18-year-old showed a lightning-fast pace at the track, finishing fourth at the end of Stage 1 and third by the time Stage 2 finished. It looked like the JR Motorsports driver would mount a late challenge for the race win, only to be caught speeding in the pit road. Given his age and inexperience, such mistakes are an inevitable part of his racing journey, lessons he will learn from to improve his racecraft. However, he isn’t the only prodigy facing struggles at the moment.

Is Connor Zilisch the next big thing in NASCAR, or just another overhyped young talent?

Have an interesting take?

Connor Zilisch’s roots are road courses and dirt racing, which is why he won his debut race at Watkins Glen. However, JRM drivers winning their debut race is not something new. Corey Day, the Hendrick Motorsports development driver, won his Late Model Debut at Hickory Motor Speedway in 2024 for JR Motorsports. The 19-year-old is another one of the highest touted prospects in motorsports at the moment, with Cup Champions like Kyle Larson saying, “He’s better than I was at his age.” Day recently achieved another milestone in his rookie Truck Series season by securing his first ever pole at Las Vegas this week!

However, a rain-marred race saw Day struggle as he eventually finished in 27th place, 2 laps behind the leaders. Regardless, Day has shown significant progress running his first Truck Series season and with support from the likes of Kyle Larson and Rick Hendrick, don’t be surprised to see him on your TV screens soon. As it stands, Chevrolet has two of the best racing prospects the world has seen in a long time, with Connor Zilisch and Corey Day.

Coming back to Connor Zilisch, if we look at the bigger picture, he is already surpassing expectations. In the opening five races, the young racer has secured one win, one top-five and two top-ten results while leading 57 laps. This is after incurring two early retirements, highlighting just how impressive a start the racer has had in his full-time role in Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team. While the Vegas heartbreak might take some time for Zilisch to recover from, he will be hungrier than ever to redeem himself at the 2025 Hard Rock Bet 300 at Homestead-Miami.

Zilisch is fully focused on the Xfinity Series

Connor Zilisch seems to be a superstar in the making. He already has a resume that many established drivers can only dream of, despite being just 18 years old. Given his natural talent and the ability to extract the maximum performance out of his car, it only feels like a matter of time before he secured a full-time seat in the NASCAR Cup Series. He has already made one appearance at the Circuit of the Americas with Trackhouse Racing this year, but the youngster isn’t in any rush to compete at the highest level regularly.

Even though competing against the very best that NASCAR has to offer will help Zilisch improve his skills, the North Carolina native has his priorities clear after committing to Dale Earnhardt Jr’s JR Motorsports. He said, “I have an Xfinity schedule; I need to focus on chasing a championship there. So, honestly, the Cup stuff is just a plus, and I don’t need to really focus on that right now, which I think is kind of what everyone has told me.”

As things stand, Connor Zilisch needs races under his belt to gain more NASCAR experience. Despite having a one-off Cup Series appearance, prioritizing the Xfinity Series is the wisest course of action the young racer can take to challenge himself throughout a 33-race season. While a Cup Series seat seems inevitable in the future, progressively climbing up the ranks is an important part of any talented driver’s development, even if they are as good as Zilisch.
