Last weekend at the Phoenix Raceway, Ty Gibbs stormed to a maiden Xfinity Series title. Admittedly, he has been a rather controversial figure, but no one could deny his talent. In fact, he even earned some praise from Dale Earnhardt Jr. However, this did tick off some fans who felt that Dale Jr should have let his team try harder to stop Gibbs. Naturally, the JR Motorsports team owner defended his actions or non-action.
He said, “Obviously, watching our guys. The #54 of Ty Gibbs was super quick. So I knew right away on Friday, that if he gets the lead and gets clear, gets a couple of car lengths, he’s gone. That’s the way the race played out. We threw everything at him, and he overcame it, man! He raced clean, smart. I think people took my comments about not wrecking him, it was – okay – I won’t assume anything about what people thought.”

The former NASCAR driver confessed that he was completely alright with his team being a little aggressive. After all, they were fighting for an Xfinity Series championship. So the likes of Noah Gragson, Justin Allgaier and Josh Berry pretty much had free reign in the Phoenix race. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr did warn against going overboard with their aggressive tactics.
He continued, “Here’s what I felt about it, I would have not cared one bit if they would have doored the hell out of the #54. Run him off the track, whatever. I just didn’t want them to turn him backwards into the wall. I didn’t want them to back him into the fence or crash him. I damn sure wanted them to run him into the dirt or door him.”

In the end though, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver proved to be too quick for them. Gragson and Allgaier finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively, while Berry could only muster a disappointing 13th.
