Carson Hocevar’s name has been on everyone’s tongue ever since he signed to race full-time in the Cup Series. The 20-year-old had impressed many with his performance behind the No. 42 car of Legacy Motor Club and created huge anticipation regarding his future. Clearing the rumors that had widely circulated, he took to social media to inform that he has now joined hands with Spire Motorsports to face the 2024 Cup Series season. This was a shocker because, coming from Trucks, the team Hocevar was expected to join was that of his childhood hero.

The youngster has made it known plenty of times how crazy he was about Dale Earnhardt Jr as a child. Despite failing to sign for JR Motorsports, Hocevar has now once again established his relationship with the legend.

Following his contract announcement with Spire, Hocevar got to be a part of The Athletic’s 12 Questions Series. Answering the queries of veteran reporter Jeff Gluck, the youngster made clear his frenzy for Dale Jr.

The relationship between Junior and Hocevar has been mirrored by the words that they have shared about each other over the past year. Junior has voiced his admiration for the youngster’s skills behind the wheel many times. The two can also be seen in heartwarming exchanges on social media. One such instance was following Hocevar’s racing stint at Darlington this year.

Jr tweeted, Hell of a job @CarsonHocevar was doing. Stats won’t show it, but got a lot of peoples attention today.”

Hocevar was also quick to send back his admiration!

Staying in line with his respect for Junior, Hocevar answered Gluck’s question that went, “Who is someone you would be starstruck by when meeting them?”

The Spire recruit responded that he has always been a big fan of Dale Jr. Talking about how his wildest dreams had come true, he narrated an incident that showcased the nature of their bond.

Hocevar said, “We were at the Chevy display at Bristol and they asked me who was my coolest contact. I’m like, ‘Dale Jr.’ They said, ‘Would you call him?’ So I called him and put the phone to the mic and he answered within a ring. He thought that was the funniest thing.” Hocevar went on to add how Dale was rather busy picking up his kid from school and getting ready to go to Bristol during that time. It’s pretty evident what a funnily embarrassing situation it would’ve been had Dale ignored his call and chosen not to pick it up!

While common expectations were that Hocevar would sign for JR Motorsports to drive in the Xfinity Series, sadly, Dale Jr. will not be seeing that happen for now. This is unfortunate considering the camaraderie that the two share. Hocevar recently goes candid while talking about the same.

Just around a month ago, it appeared as though Dale Jr.’s garage would be the ideal spot for Hocevar to go. The team has nurtured many Cup Series winners and has a reputation for developing star drivers. The situations that formed around Hocevar and JRM warranted the same. With Josh Berry moving to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2024, Hocevar was expected to fill the No. 8 gap for JRM. The outfit would have been a place for him to amplify his race craft and showcase his talent. But instead, the youngster has chosen to jump straight into the top tier with Spire Motorsports.

Answering Gluck’s question further, Hocevar talked about the impact that Junior had on his journey to NASCAR. He said, “I’m not big into music or movies or anything. NASCAR was my dream. (…) Just talking to him [Dale Jr] feels like such a big deal. Like I had bedsheets of this guy when I was like 4 or 5, you know? It’s like, ‘Man, this is awesome.’ It’s just something I never thought I would get to do.”
