As Dirty Mo Media gears up to launch the latest episode of Herm & Schrader on November 13, the Dale Jr Download shares a heartwarming moment between Ken Schrader and Dale Earnhardt Jr. But there’s one story that stands out—a surprising flashback from Dale Jr.’s past, which ties back to Carl Edwards’ dad.
On the November 8th episode of Dale Jr. Download, the JR Motorsports boss starts reminiscing about an incident that happened years ago. Back when he was just starting to carve out his place in NASCAR, he and his friends ended up at a gentleman’s club after a race. The group of drivers, including Jr., had been traveling, and it was supposed to be a quick stop on their way home. But things didn’t go quite as expected.
Jr. recalls with a chuckle, “We get to the door and try to go in, and the guy says, ‘Hey, you can’t come in.'” Turns out, they weren’t exactly welcome. Schrader and the others, trying to make light of the situation, told Jr. to stay quiet and act like he belonged. “Just keep your eyes forward. Don’t say a word,” they told him. But the plan didn’t work. They were turned away.
So, Dale Jr. and one of the guys, who happened to be Cousin Carl (Carl Edwards), ended up sitting in the bed of a pickup truck outside the club, drinking beer and watching the chaos unfold. It was the kind of night that would stick with him. “We’re just sitting there, and we watch this guy doing a gun deal in the parking lot,” Jr. remembers. “It was wild.”
But the most unexpected twist came years later when Jr. and Carl Edwards were sitting together at a driver’s meeting at Daytona. Jr. had just arrived early and sat down next to Carl, who waved him over to meet his dad. “You know my dad?” Carl asked. Jr. was a little confused, saying, “No, I don’t think so, man.” That’s when Carl hit him with the surprising bombshell: “Yeah, y’all hung out in the back of a pickup truck outside a st–p club in Kansas back in ’91.”

Dale Jr. laughed, stunned by the connection. “That was you?” he says, realizing just how small the racing world is. Carl’s dad, who had shared that night with Jr., was none other than the guy he’d met with years ago outside the club. Now that Carl Edwards has retired, he, in fact, decided to follow in Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s footsteps by giving up the steering wheel for a mic.

Carl Edwards is embracing a new chapter in his career. After retiring from racing in 2016, he stepped away from the spotlight to focus on family and community work. But Edwards has recently revealed a growing interest in following the footsteps of legends like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kevin Harvick. He wants to do this by making a transition into broadcasting.

Despite his legendary status on the track, Edwards prefers the microphone to the fire suit, indicating that he’s open to TV work. Edwards’ broadcasting journey is not entirely new. He first dipped his toes into the TV world back in 2012, calling Nationwide Series races for ESPN. His appearances continued in the following years, and now, with veterans like Harvick joining FOX Sports and Dale Jr. moving to TNT Sports, it’s clear the trend of drivers transitioning to the booth is only growing.

This shift towards veteran drivers in broadcasting isn’t accidental. NASCAR on FOX made a strategic decision in 2022 to bring in a rotating lineup of former drivers like Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, and Danica Patrick to keep things fresh and relatable for the audience.
