NASCAR has time and again brought new directives to the sport. While some have been welcomed, others haven’t got the best response. We have seen how the directive concerning the modification of parts was damaging to Hendrick Motorsports and Kaulig Racing after the race in Phoenix. While the directive might have been unclear in that case, it isn’t so in one of the feature changes involved in the 2023 campaign. Dale Earnhardt Jr couldn’t hide his happiness recently speaking about the change.

Dale Jr has always been one of the most outspoken personalities in the NASCAR Cup Series. He is as much engaged in the sport at present as he was prior to his retirement, and he voices his opinion on a regular basis. While fans may not always like it, most of them will surely do this time around.

In 2017, NASCAR introduced stage racing in their bid to excite a larger digital audience to their long-duration races. This saw a race split into smaller segments, creating room for more curiosity and of course, commercial breaks. We have seen how the commercial breaks aren’t in the fans’ good books and almost the same thing can be said for stage breaks.

However, there was a lot of excitement when NASCAR announced the elimination of stage breaks for road course events this season. Prior to the Cup race at the Circuit of the Americas, Dale Jr discussed this in detail in the latest episode of his podcast The Dale Jr. Download.

The 48-year-old revealed the fans’ views on the stage breaks. He said, “Fans have been begging for these no-stages. They don’t like the stages they don’t like the races stopping. They are fine with giving away stage points or having a stage winner but they would prefer that there would be no break in the action. The amount of caution and green flag racing sort of weighs heavily toward the caution side when you add these stage breaks.”

This change does demand a modification in strategy for teams. Junior explained, “It will be a strategy race where who you know how many times do you stop um and even the length of this race at COTA makes it really challenging to do a lot of different things for multiple teams to be on multiple strategies and so with the way the fuel works in this race.

Ultimately, the two-time Daytona 500 winner did have his say on the change. He said, “So you know anyways if you love the F1 style strategy and the races and what you see in a lot of the road courses in open wheel, this is more than likely going to look like that, which I’m fine with, I’m good with it, I’m glad that we’re getting away from the stage breaks at the road courses.

Luckily, both Dale Jr and other NASCAR fans were seen expressing their happiness after the COTA race.
