The Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain incident at Phoenix Raceway during the championship-decided race raised a couple of eyebrows. Soon drivers were seen pointing fingers at each other, while still being unsure as to who was in the wrong. NASCAR veteran, Dale Earnhardt Jr recently explained his thoughts on the incident and how he believed Elliott was in the wrong.

Dale Earnhardt Jr stated, So there’s, this is really this is this really comes down to mentality and so Ross is in position. He moves left, it gets under the nine, and he’s underneath him right. And so if the nine comes down, every driver’s probably gonna do things a little differently. Ross is the type of guy that if he’s got position and you try to block, he’s holding the steering wheel straight and you’re spinning, your fault, okay?”

“If the nine comes down on me, I probably would have jerked the wheel to left and went even lower. There was a little bit of room down there that I would probably try to keep my momentum, maybe going if we make contact that stops my momentum and, you know, and spinning him out. I lost a couple spots about the cars on the outside of me because it’s gonna slow me down as I turn him.”

“So I’m trying to keep go left so I can keep my momentum up. And eventually, he’s gonna have to fade back right to make the corner. And so, everybody would have done that differently. There’s no right or wrong. I don’t think Ross is wrong, but holding the wheel straight and letting the nine spin himself out. I think it was obviously, not Ross’s fault because Chase couldn’t tell if he did anything wrong.

Given Chastain’s reputation, one could understand why would Chase Elliott’s spotter point fingers straight towards Ross without putting much though into it. But in the end, we all know that what took place between them was just a racing incident and nothing more.
