Racing tracks are as much of an essential part of NASCAR as the drivers. An eye-witness to uncountable wins, electrifying battles, and home to a horde of fans, tracks have found a corner in every fan’s heart. NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. understands the value of these venues in a sport that moves ahead rapidly. An old-school driver by heart, he has never backed out of taking a chance to reciprocate some love toward many long-forgotten tracks.

And in recent news, the latest driver to help tackle the same issue is Denny Hamlin. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has seen his fair share of tracks in a long-spanning career. A close affiliate of Junior, Hamlin has shown interest in bringing some of the most loved speedways back on the radar of NASCAR.

Being a famed connoisseur of stock-car racing in the country, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has never left a stone unturned in his efforts to improve the culture. Having been primarily involved in the revival of the celebrated venue of North Wilkesboro, Junior has the credentials to back up his ambitions. While the North Wilkesboro renovation can be termed quite successful, considering the action we saw at the All-Star Race earlier this year at the track, another legendary speedway has attracted Junior’s attention.

The Southside Speedway has been closed for over a decade now. Following the menace of COVID-19 in the world, when the 2020 season was canceled, the announcement of its permanent closure was declared. Since then, it has stayed in a far corner of stock-car racing. Located in Richmond, Virginia, the short track is now on the verge of finding suitors for a potential return to mainstream racing.

Chesterfield officials have begun the search for probable partners who could help them fund a revival project of the Southside Speedway. Dale Earnhardt Jr. came to notice this and wasted no time in adding Denny Hamlin to the conversation. This not only adds two major drivers to a possible renovation plan, but also resonates their feeling of nostalgia to the fanbase, who will shift their attention towards it.

With Junior having former experience in these cases, their participation comes a major boost for Chesterfield authorities. They will be happy to see their request-for-proposal making waves in the community and will be hoping to find a solution to it soon.

What do the Chesterfield officials have in mind for the forgotten track?

The speedway is owned by the Chesterfield Economic Development Authority. They have the rights to lease or sell the racetrack to potential buyers upon close inspection of the offers presented to them after the announcement of their RFP process. Having set the deadline for Oct 11, there is not much time for admirers of this track to get going either. The RFP has been issued as of Monday, but this time there has been a slight change in the process.

The county officials have issued the request as a combined package for both the racetrack and its neighboring River City Sportsplex. This amounts to 57 acres of area, which has turned out to be somewhat of a hindrance to their plans. Having to accommodate business-minded bids and the bidders interested in purely the racing aspect of it was a tough task for them. As a solution to this issue, they have separated the Sportsplex from the 14.8-acre racetrack area. This allows potential buyers or collaborators who want to revive the track to consider it as a standalone option.

Commercial requests for involvement in the sports-complex area will be addressed later on by the CEDA. This has provided a chance for big names like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin to come in as a part of the renovation program.
