There’s no driver-crew chief pairing in NASCAR history that has been as dominant as Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus. The dynamic duo was destined for Cup Series greatness ever since they first teamed up to create the #48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. The pair’s relationship was so deep that Knaus would only miss out on two of Jimmie Johnson’s 83 Cup Series victories owing to his suspension.
While the two have since parted ways from a Cup Series campaign, their visit to Le Mans with Garage 56 was nothing short of sweet nostalgia, and fans were equally delighted to know that Johnson and Knaus would be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Chiming in to share his opinion on the hallmark achievement, Dale Earnhardt Jr had nothing but praise for the Hendrick Motorsports duo.

Like other sports that have faced dominant champions throughout their history, the NASCAR community was split in their opinion of Jimmie Johnson’s dominance. While many attributed his success to the car built by Chad Knaus, was Jimmie Johnson not equally responsible? As far as Dale Earnhardt Jr was concerned, it was the pair that made their magic work, not just one individual.
Earnhardt Jr shared in an interview with Fox, “Any driver in the field would have loved to work with Chad and would have loved to know what his approach was and some of the things he was doing to make his cars work, Jimmie was a very fortunate guy to be able to be behind the wheel of that race car.” After all, while many other greats were fighting for the championship, the advantage Johnson always had by his side was Chad Knaus. However, the Cars Tour owner also felt Johnson was one of a kind.

Earnhardt Jr added, “But Jimmie went out there and got the job done and he was great, non-controversial, didn’t make mistakes off of the race track, had a great personality and did a great job all the way through and is still today, a big asset to the industry and a big asset to the sport as an owner and behind the wheel.” Junior thought that the combination of a great driver and an equally talented crew chief was what made the #48 so dominant, making their Hall of Fame nomination a rightful tribute to their legacy.

Just like Chad Knaus had delivered on his championship-winning promise after only 13 races with Johnson, the seven-time champion could market himself to Jeff Gordon all those years ago that truly kick-started this journey of dominance. In that sense, if Johnson had not approached Gordon, his team with Knaus would have inevitably gone up in flames. And while Jr was quick to credit Johnson as a man of great promise, it was the crew chief that brought out the champion from within the HMS rookie.

As of today, Knaus and Johnson have joined the legends of NASCAR in the Hall of Fame, but if the relationship between the pair had not been as straightforward and brutal as it were, their hopes of leaving such a lasting mark on the sport’s history would have been nothing but a distant dream. While Johnson was always a promising driver, Chad Knaus’ tough love enabled him to shine brighter than ever in the #48, maintaining that momentum for over six seasons!
Jimmie Johnson was quoted by News18 as he reflected, “I know for sure there is no one who brought more out of me than Chad. The accountability. How he would push me. Of course, we butted heads at times, but he believed in me and knew how to bring the best out of me. When I was close to getting something right and a lot of scenarios I was in, I’d be like, “OK, that works.’ And Chad would say ‘No. You can do better. I can see it. We’ve got to be perfect everywhere.”
After every race, while Jimmie Johnson and the rest of the team celebrated their trophy, Chad Knaus would promptly remind his star driver of the lost opportunities in each race. Whether it could have been a record-breaking run or a stint with better tire management, Johnson would always know what was on his crew chief’s mind immediately. And though this agitated the HMS driver, it ultimately led to their iconic dominance.
