The stepping stone to today’s Cup Series was laid by the legendary Red Byron. NASCAR’s first-ever stock car champion began his racing career as a World War II hero, permanently scarred in the gruesome battle. The racing body has never failed to acknowledge and appreciate the invaluable contribution of the country’s veterans through their services to the nation.

This year, they were also joined by the eminent Cup teams of Rick Hendrick, Joe Gibbs, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Since the season ended with the championship race in Phoenix last week, NASCAR chose to commemorate the Federal Holiday with an inspirational post on their social media page and launched a special initiative.

NASCAR’s pre-race ceremonies are deeply infused with a spirit of gratitude and applause for the people who stood up to protect the ethos of the nation at immense personal cost. From the presentation of the US flag to military flyovers, a typical race weekend is an incredible combination of sport and service, fans and military troops, all coming together to celebrate American history and its rich sporting legacy.

Particularly on Memorial Day and Veterans Day weekends, designated to enshrine the unforgettable role played by those valiant members of society. In light of that, Hall of Famer Dale Jr did not miss the opportunity to thank the veterans as well. The 2x Xfinity champion began his widely successful Xfinity racing team with the US Navy as its primary sponsor. JR Motorsports #88 Chevrolet sporting the Navy imprint became a quintessential aspect of the sports’ legacy. Even after the US Navy parted ways a few years later, their unshakeable faith helped his team attain its current form.

Junior took to his social media account to post, “If you’re a veteran and you see this, I appreciate you and your service to this country. Today and everyday. #VeteransDay #ThankAVeteran

The Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing teams also shared their own messages of gratitude and support.

After permanent impairment in battle bombing, Red Byron used a leg brace to support his feet on a racecar’s clutch, but the war veteran did not let it impede his passion for racing. As a result, Byron and his team owner, former Army soldier Raymond Parks, claimed the first Cup Series title and established an intrinsic bond between NASCAR and the US Militia. And Joe Gibbs Racing’s commemoration of the day serves as additional proof.

Over the years, several racers, crew members, and technicians found their way toward the sport after their service tenures ended. The governing body founded many organizations, such as ‘Holidays for Heroes’, to provide aid and support to veterans and their families. This year, NASCAR focused on the neglected mental health of traumatized warriors and partnered with Sound-Off for measures to prevent veteran suicides.

Such an initiative is a commendable step toward recognizing the invisible mental wounds suffered by war-torn heroes. Honoring the same spirit, Hendrick Motorsports stated, To those who have served and continue to serve, thank you for your bravery, sacrifice, and dedication. Your courage inspires us all. Happy Veterans Day.”
