Connor Zilisch is back on his glory ride. After two forgettable races at Daytona and Atlanta, the JR Motorsports Xfinity rookie charged back at COTA. Last Saturday’s Focused Health 250 witnessed Zilisch overcoming hurdles like a pro driver. He is becoming a better racer every passing race, getting noticed by fans, veterans and fellow drivers alike. Zilisch’s race at COTA saw a bounce back like never before!

Connor Zilisch faced a penalty on lap 24, having to restart from 32nd place. Then hard-charging rivals like Corey Heim and William Sawalich hounded his back bumper. But he whisked them aside with immense ease. This was further proof that he was wise beyond his years. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is still mindful of his tender age.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. leaves the prodigy missing out on action

There can be no doubt about Connor Zilisch’s young success. Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s prodigy turned 18 just last year and had already achieved many laurels before that. Some of his teenage achievements include the Mini Rok World Championship in South Garda, Italy, the SCCA Jim Fitzgerald Rookie of the Year, and a pole win in his first Trans Am TA2 race. In 2024, he won the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in the LMP2 class. Just two months after he officially entered adulthood, Zilisch claimed a debut Xfinity win at Watkins Glen.

Now Connor Zilisch is basking in the glory of his second NASCAR Xfinity Series victory. It also marked a significant milestone for JR Motorsports. Ever since Justin Allgaier won the 2024 Xfinity Series championship, the team has been on a roll. Allgaier led the team on its Cup Series debut in Daytona, and now Zilisch fetched it the season’s first win. So celebrations are underway! Social media platforms are flooded with JRM posts. But wait, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Instagram story revealed a curious detail.

The two-time Daytona 500 winner posted a picture featuring himself, Connor Zilisch, and a few other team officials. Dale Earnhardt Jr. captioned: “Toasting to a couple Connor wins 🍻” Dale Jr. and the other team members can be seen holding Bud Light beers, a nod to the veteran’s long-time sponsor. However, we could see Zilisch holding a Red Bull energy drink in his hand. The speedster roped in Red Bull as a sponsor for his 2025 season – but it also shows just how young he is. Evidently, Dale Jr. did not allow Zilisch to enjoy before the appropriate age.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Connor Zilisch the next big thing in NASCAR, or is it too soon to tell?

Have an interesting take?

The picture stands in stark contrast to Dale Jr.’s wild post-win parties, but it feels great to see that he is a more responsible owner than a driver. His coming of age, wife Amy, kids, and, of course,  his team have played a major role in shaping his life. Junior is imparting the right values for his mentee Zilisch, and it will surely pay off. Even if the young prodigy is just leased out to JRM by Justin Marks, he gets the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the sport, and this will be life-changing for him. In a few years, fans will see him climb the ranks of the NASCAR Cup Series like he is doing in Xfinity currently.

Even if Connor Zilisch is still basking in youth, the NASCAR garage salutes his racing skills and keeps him at a pedestal.

Cup Series veteran hails Zilisch’s approach

Connor Zilisch laid a trailblazing path to victory at COTA on Saturday. But while on his way, he showed glimpses of aggression at his rivals. In his quest to climb back to the top after the penalty, Zilisch clashed with William Sawalich and Justin Allgaier. Corey Heim apparently bore the brunt of his rough driving, as the Toyota driver was left with a flat tire on lap 60. However, Zilisch acted humbly post-race and duly apologized for his mid-race antics. During his Cup Series debut on the same racetrack, he ran some of the fastest laps initially. However, Zilisch finished last in 37th place due to an unexpected clash with Daniel Suarez on lap 50.

Denny Hamlin, 54-time Cup Series race winner, marveled at the youngster’s racing prowess nonetheless. He compared Dale Earnhardt Jr.‘s prodigy to himself and said that Zilisch is way ahead. “He made some mistakes. We all recognize that, but I still feel for an 18-year-old — I mean for God’s sake, I could be this kid’s father, that’s how crazy this world is right now that I could be his father — but for an 18-year-old, he is so far further advanced as a motorsports driver than I was when I was 18. It’s not even remotely close. I think I was probably running third or fourth in four-cylinder mini stocks at that age.”
