Despite retiring from Cup Series racing a number of years ago, Dale Earnhardt Jr has kept himself quite relevant even today with NASCAR fans. Sure, his podcasts and broadcasting ventures do play a part in that, but nothing is as powerful in getting through to people as social media. And Junior has truly mastered the art of using social media to keep himself relevant to the fans. However, the former Cup Series driver is still quite uncertain about certain things.

He recently spoke about an issue he faced regarding reacting to posts on X (formerly Twitter) when the content isn’t positive news. In the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, the 48-year-old shared another social media dilemma. This time about sharing a post with good intentions at heart, but that can be easily misinterpreted.

Junior made a surprise appearance at the Locked In 150 at the Florence Motor Speedway on Friday. In spite of retiring from the Cup, the 48-year-old still takes part in local racing events, and the Locked In 150 was just another one of those. Fans at the venue were in for a treat, as news of Junior’s participation was not common knowledge.

Earnhardt Jr has admitted that he is a big fan of short-track racing and that he supports local racing events that use short tracks. These kinds of tracks are not as long as the ovals we see in NASCAR, but the short distance of the track makes for close running, which is always exciting to watch as a fan.

But the thing that perhaps impressed Junior the most at the track was the in-field bathroom. The Florence Motor Speedway is owned by Steve Zacharias and his family, and during the off-season, they renovated the in-field washroom, which was not in the best of conditions. And now, according to Junior, it looks fantastic.

He was so impressed with the renovation that he even sent out a tweet about it, and that is where his new social media dilemma stems from.

His co-host, Mike Davis, was quick to tell him that a bathroom tweet could easily be interpreted as Junior making fun of Zacharias.

“This was kind of along the lines of last week’s conversation about social media etiquette. I’m like, you know what, I badly wanna share with people how nice these bathrooms are but it’s a weird tweet,” Junior said.

“It is because you almost wonder if you’re making fun of him…When you go and try to interpret the different kinds of messages. You tweeting a bathroom isn’t something you typically do, so,” came the response from Mike Davis.

Junior then revealed that it was actually the owner of the track who sent him the picture that he had tweeted and that he had his reservations about how fans were going to take it from the moment it went public.

“I text Steve and I tell Steve send me a picture of the in-field bathroom. So Steve sent me that picture that I tweeted. And that was right after Steve had finished building it in the off-season. And so, I tweeted that and as soon as I sent it out, I was like, yeah this is surely getting misinterpreted,” Junior added.

He might have figured out social media to interact with the fans in the best way possible, but there is more than one aspect of the medium that still confuses the former Cup Series driver, as was revealed about a week ago.

A while back, on an episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast itself, Junior and Mike Davis were in conversation about what to do when one gets news that’s not exactly good on X and the only way to react to it is a heart, which can seem insensitive.

“You’re sad about it, you’re mad about it, or you don’t like it, you agree with the news, right?” said Junior. “But you don’t want to reply to the post. But you want to show that you acknowledge this in some way. The only way to do that is I guess, a retweet is one way, but a heart, a like.”

Mike Davis then brought up the example of Rick Ware Racing’s competition director Tommy Baldwin Jr. who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Junior said that while he does want to support Baldwin Jr, a heart reaction to the news of someone getting cancer just seemed weird.

“But there are people that have liked it. You see, there’s people that have liked it and you’re like ‘Man, is it okay to like it ’cause I like Tommy. I want to support what he is doing. I don’t know if he cares but maybe he does appreciate all the support,” Junior added.
