Despite steering the ship for the lion’s share of the Cook Out 400 and leading an impressive 102 laps of the 400 on the leaderboard, the co-owner of RFK Racing found himself marooned in the 6th position when the dust had settled. During the pit stop, the helmsman of the No. 6 Ford Mustang was all at sea while aligning into his pit stall, causing precious sand to slip through the hourglass due to this faux pas. His cohort in arms, Chris Buescher, however, crossed the Rubicon and claimed victory.

Buescher’s time in the limelight, leading the charge for 88 laps, set a personal milestone in his eight-year NASCAR Cup Series career—a precedent for him. While the RFK co-owner painted a grin, delighted with the team’s showing as a whole, the seasoned NASCAR veteran, Dale Earnhardt Jr., was seemingly left with a sour taste, miffed at the former Team Penske wheelman for not snatching the laurel despite having the upper hand. Dale Jr., in a recent revelation, bemoaned the RFK driver’s inability to scale the pinnacle, lamenting the fact that the iconic driver has seemingly fallen off the family tree of racing success.

“Dang, it! Here it is!” disappointed Dale Earnhardt Jr. about an experienced driver not winning at Richmond

On a sunny Sunday, Chris Buescher maneuvered a spectacular race to clinch his inaugural victory in 2023. Cutting a swathe through the competition, he overtook 25 adversaries who held pole positions and outflanked his superior en route to the winner’s podium.

Although the day unfurled in favor of RFK racing at the Cookout 400, with the No. 6 and No. 17 Ford Mustang pilots commanding 190 of the 400 laps, it was an unmissable testament to the team’s prowess. Indeed, the erstwhile Penske Racing driver snagged stage two, but the old hand’s blunder during the pit-box entry cost him invaluable seconds, precipitating his tumble to the sixth position.

An impassioned critique has since emanated from Dale Earnhardt Jr., voicing his disappointment over Brad Keselowski‘s missed opportunity to seize a flawlessly strategized race due to a handful of errors. Dale Jr. emphasized the paramount importance of clinching a victory as a team owner at this critical juncture and the responsibility he shoulders to perpetuate his father’s illustrious legacy.

“I thought Brad obviously led the most laps in the race, and I am like, “Dang it! Here it is!” Finally, Brad is going to win his first race, and this is going to be a huge milestone for him personally. Why is it important for Brad to win as an owner? His family has raised their whole lives. Brad grew up watching his dad drive his own cars, so this is full circle for Brad. This is Brad becoming his father; this is Brad doing something that he saw his dad do for the majority of his life. So this is really critical for Brad to go to victory lane driving a car that he owns. And so I thought that was actually going to happen. I was hoping it would happen to Brad; I am hoping that happens for him, and I think it will. But Chris Buescher got the job done, get to out front, get the clean air, and nobody could beat him.”

Indeed, Dale Earnhardt Jr. seems to be nursing a profound aspiration for Brad Keselowski to ignite his inborn talent. He fervently wishes Keselowski to harness the vehicular fervor passed down through his paternal lineage and metamorphose into a triumphant owner-cum-driver in the NASCAR realm. In Earnhardt’s eyes, Keselowski is the puzzle piece that could bring into focus the hitherto unattained zenith of his team’s collective ambitions.

While Chris Buescher’s victory understandably brought a wave of euphoria to the team’s co-owner, it’s evident that they had further stratagems in their playbook that were left unrealized at Richmond Speedway.

The pinnacle of ambition for the RFK squadron was to secure a double victory—the top two podium positions. Yet, the triumph they accomplished is perceived as a significant stride in the right direction.

“Tremendous execution,” commented team co-owner Brad Keselowski. “We wanted to win 1-2. That’s the ultimate goal. We didn’t get that, but we still had a heck of a day where we ran 1-2 of the parts. This is kind of the next step for us: to be able to win races on a contender basis.”
