Throughout the sport’s history, NASCAR has seen quite a few engine manufacturers power its cars to give fans high-octane racing action. Of all the manufacturers, Chevrolet has been the most successful when it comes to championships and they are ahead by quite a distance. In the Cup Series, Chevy-powered cars have become champions a whopping 41 times. Ford occupies a distant second place with 17 Cup victories and Toyota is in third with three to their name.
This season, the battle for the title has been primarily between Chevy and Toyota, but at Richmond, Ford laid down a marker as six cars with their engine finished in the top 10 with Chris Buescher of RFK Racing taking the chequered flag in first place. Meanwhile, Chevy teams, especially Hendrick Motorsports, delivered a performance to forget at the short track.
Although the top five on the points table consist of drivers in Toyota- and Chevrolet-powered cars, Ford’s performance at Richmond was a sign that they are getting into the fight.

It’s us vs everybody: Dale Earnhardt Jr warns Chevrolet
On a recent episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, Dale Earnhardt Jr. said that Chevrolet should not just look at Toyota as their main rival this year. Rather, they should be seeing everyone else as a threat and move ahead with that in mind.
“I think the Chevrolet’s gotta be like, ‘hey man okay, we need to, you know for this track and for Phoenix, for short tracks and tracks that are under a mile, flat, we need to get some urgency, I think, in what we’re doing. Not time to panic, but certainly, if the Fords are gonna run like this, it’s no longer just us vs Toyota. It’s us vs everybody’,” Dale Jr said, speaking to co-host and close friend Mike Davis.
William Byron may have won the most races this season in the Chevy-powered Hendrick Motorsports car, but the team’s performance in Richmond was nothing short of a disaster. Chase Elliott finished highest up the pack in 13th place. Teammates Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson, and William Byron could only manage 18th, 19th, and 21st respectively. It was almost like Chevy and Ford switched places for the Richmond race.
It has been a tough year overall for Hendrick Motorsports as well. Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman are yet to confirm their playoff spots and with only four races left in the regular season, things are starting to get tense.
However, one mustn’t forget that Hendrick Motorsports is historically one of the most successful teams in the history of NASCAR. Their most successful driver-crew chief pairing, Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus, was recently inducted in the 2024 NASCAR Hall of Fame in what was a historic day for the team.

Nobody quite believed Dale Earnhardt’s seven championship victories would be matched in NASCAR. And then came Jimmie Johnson. Along with his trusted crew chief and good friend Chad Knaus, he matched Earnhardt’s record with Hendrick Motorsports. He won his first five championship titles consecutively from 2006 to 2010 in what was an era of utter dominance. His last two championship wins came in 2013 and 2016.

Johnson was full of praise for his former crew chief and said that he was happy that he will get the opportunity to share the stage with someone he trusted more than anyone in his professional career.
“When I knew my name was going on the ballot, I found out Chad’s was as well and something in the back of my mind was hoping that this opportunity would come about. I’m very proud of what we accomplished and the fact that we get to enjoy this moment and relive all those memories going into the Hall together makes this all the more special,” he said, as per hendrickmotorsports.com.
