Amy Earnhardt's fear of taxidermy—do you think it's justified or just plain weird?

NASCAR drivers usually harbor the same kind of fear. Driving their cars at 200 miles per hour within inches of each other, racers are at immense risk. They roll, tumble, and slide, and hit walls with incredible impact. So Christopher Bell’s phobia is closely related to his profession. “Fire,” he confessed in 2022, “Just that and not being able to get out of the car.” But what about channeling that fear into their loved ones?

Dale Earnhardt Jr‘s wife expressed the same sentiment recently. Racers are inherently good drivers but can be a tad bit reckless as well. That may be why Amy shuns sitting in a car where her husband is in the driver’s seat.

Remember why Dale Earnhardt inherited the infamous ‘Intimidator’ title? In the 1987 Winston Cup race, the seven-time Cup champion got a shove from Bill Elliott. But displaying his aggressive tactics, Earnhardt did a ‘Pass in the Grass’ move and slid right back on track.

Earnhardt was generally known for his reckless style. His son seems to have emulated his chaotic driving skills, as Dale Jr’s racing maneuvers spill over into his daily life as well.

In a recent episode of The Dale Jr Download, a fun session ensued. Both Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife Amy were asked to write down the other’s weirdest phobia. And what Dale Jr wrote regarding Amy thoroughly makes sense. “This also could be a pet peeve and fear, but it’s my driving…She doesn’t like my driving.” Then Amy retorted, scoring no goal in Dale’s favor: “Neither do our children.”

Living with a racecar driver, especially The Intimidator’s son, is no mean feat. And there is a specific reason why Dale Earnhardt Jr has instilled this fear in Amy, which may feel jittery to us as well. “I make turns too fast…Well, you said you’re not scared of anything, but when I go around turns.” Then Amy tweaked Dale’s theory a little, yet sticking to the overall fear of him taking the wheel. “It’s not my biggest fear, but it’s annoying. He does scare me sometimes when he’s not paying attention. When he turns too fast and your head hits the window, that’s not fun…If you have to hold on tight to brace yourself.”

In a 2022 interview, a few NASCAR drivers were interviewed about their biggest fears. Christopher Bell stuck to the common racer’s phobia of fire, while Kyle Busch professed a fear of failure. But some others had unexpected answers – birds scare Chase Briscoe while women give Austin Cindric the chills. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr’s phobia may pale all this as his wife Amy revealed. “Alright, he’s got two pretty large ones – being alone and jewelry.” Being alone is pretty standard, but fear of jewelry? That is a first, don’t you agree?

As it turns out, it is an actual phobia – kosmemophobia. In a 2018 interview, Dale Earnhardt Jr confessed that this is why he wears a unique wedding ring made of silicone. But there is a childhood reason for his excessive fear. Before the 2015 Daytona 500, Dale Jr. revealed that his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, made it worse. “My sister used to chase me around the house with necklaces and stuff,” he said with a laugh. “It’s creepy to me. (Earnhardt Miller) made it worse. She definitely antagonized me and terrorized me when I was younger.”

Evidently, Dale Earnhardt Jr’s fear of jewelry may be the strangest of the lot. What kind of phobia do you have? What did you make of the racecar driver’s wife’s fear? Share with us in the comments.
