As the CARS Tour organizers are set to trust the old-school track, the revamped North Wilkesboro Speedway is causing sparks of excitement among race enthusiasts. The track will host a couple of races this season. Apart from this, the revived track is also set to host the All-Star race and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. It seems like Dale Earnhardt Jr’s efforts are finally bearing fruit.
Goodyear had defending Truck Series champion Ben Rhodes, Corey Heim, and Christian Eckes ahead of Wright Band 250 for the pre-race tire testing on NWB Speedway. This is the first test after the historic short track was revamped for the first time since 1984 with a race-ready asphalt mixture in preparation for the May 18 Wright Brand 250 and the May 19 All-Star Open and NASCAR All-Star Race. As the Truck series testing took place, Kaden Honeycutt of Niece Motorsports reacted to a bizarre incident that unfolded on track.

Honeycutt took to his X and shared Eckes’ video of dashing through the North Wilkesboro Speedway. The 20-year-old is surprised and excited at the same time to see how fast a truck can race out here. The CARS Tour driver cannot wait to witness how a late model performs on this transformed track.
Honeycutt wrote, “I don’t know if you guys see this to. But they are absolutely hauling the mail here now. Makes me think how fast a late model will be here in May for the CARS Tour.” He added, “Qualifying in 2023 here fast time was a 20.27. He just ran a 18.20. Holy crap,” as Eckes drove as fat as he could.

NASCAR had one of its most popular assets on this historic race track when it shifted its focus to driving on bigger speedways. With mostly a mile or a half-length of tracks out for competition, this half-mile race track felt neglected and was literally in ruins for decades. To that extent, the deserted buildings were appropriate for horror movie shoots.
After the protest of fans who created the drive to ‘Save the Speedway’ and Dale Earnhardt Jr’s collective efforts, the North Wilkesboro Speedway is now indistinguishable. The speedway remained dormant since its last NASCAR race in 1996. It made a triumphant return to racing during the summer of 2022.

Dale Earnhardt Jr deserves special credit for going the extra mile ahead and seeking the help of the online racing simulation platform iRacing. The virtual North Wilkesboro Speedway gained prominence on iRacing and evolved into a hub for racing enthusiasts. This happened, especially during the pandemic shutdown. Special funds were allocated to take care of infrastructure and revise seating arrangements for the audience.
It would be an interesting sight to behold when the Late Models go on a race at a packed stadium.
