It’s official! NASCAR has taken over the Madhouse. The sport’s longest-running weekly race track Bowman Gray Stadium finds itself under new management, with the lease of the stadium with the City of Winston-Salem. As the first paved track that NASCAR competed on, the stadium has stood the test of time, and could perhaps become home to a Cup Series race sooner than later! With that said, the excitement around the Madhouse making a return to NASCAR may not be shared by everyone.

“We already go to the real quarter mile dime piece” – Landon Huffman dismisses Bowman Gray Stadium as a CARS Tour prospect

Ever since NASCAR announced its plans to take over Bowman Gray Stadium, the community has been buzzing with excitement. While some expect a Cup Series race to be held at the Winston-Salem track, veteran insider Matt Weaver had a brilliant idea for Earnhardt Jr’s beloved CARS Tour series. He shared on X, “Everyone wants a Cup race at The Madhouse all of a sudden and I’m just asking for CARS Tour”

Ever since the zMAX CARS Tour revealed its motives to grow the series with an extension in their Flo Racing deal, the idea of more race tracks making their way to the calendar has picked up traction. However, a prominent CARS Tour driver and team owner Landon Huffman feels that the category already has its flagship quarter-mile race. Naturally, he immediately shut down the veteran insider’s wishful thinking with a simple response; “No.”

But Matt Weaver isn’t one to back down so quickly! The Sportsnaut correspondent retorted, “I knew this was coming and I knew exactly how you’d respond too. Down to the number of syllables lol.” Still, Huffman was hellbent on the existing race at Wake County Speedway having an edge over the Madhouse. He stated, We already go to the real quarter mile dime piece in North Carolina👌🏻”

The debate between the two didn’t end there. Weaver pointed out the lower seating capacity at Wake County; 10,000 less people though!” But ultimately, Huffman had the last laugh. He concluded with a solid argument and wrote, “Stands are packed there too. Give them more stands. The same 10,000 people have been going to the stadium for 40 years lol And they don’t go to watch the racing.”

While it seems like NASCAR’s ‘newest’ track may not make its way to Earnhardt Jr’s zMAX CARS Tour anytime soon, the quarter mile known for its chaotic races may just make for the perfect venue for the Busch Light Clash.

Can the ‘Madhouse’ be the perfect home for the Busch Light Clash?

It’s no secret that the future of the Busch Light Clash remains uncertain after the expiration of the L.A. Coliseum contract. Despite fans putting pressure on the sport to make a return to Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR wants to try their hand at other tracks. With that said, the Bowman Gray Stadium could serve as the perfect candidate if the sport decided to leave the Los Angeles market. While the move doesn’t have solid ground as of yet, the importance of the Madhouse in connection to NASCAR’s very beginnings could create a historic exhibition race.

As NASCAR aims to make the most use of its new acquisition, the mayor of Winston-Salem, Allen Joines, shed light on the plans in store. He was quoted by Flo Racing, “Bowman Gray Racing has been a part of the fabric of Winston-Salem for many years. In fact, some attribute NASCAR’s beginning to the races held at Bowman Gray Stadium. It is for that and other reasons that the City of Winston-Salem is delighted that NASCAR is acquiring Winston-Salem Speedway Inc. I am doubly happy that NASCAR has committed to the continuance of the weekly races at the stadium, that are so popular with our citizens and visitors.”

The mayor made it clear that the officials plan to continue with the beloved weekly races at Bowman Gray, with a key focus on growing motorsport tourism in the area. And after considering the high praise that Ben Kennedy, Senior VP of Racing Development and Strategy for NASCAR had to say, it’s evident that the sport has big plans for the quarter-mile track’s future. He stated, “We look forward to leading the racing operations of the facility in partnership with the City of Winston-Salem to preserve the history and legacy of the racetrack for the next generation of fans and racers.”
