The holidays have always been a big deal in the Earnhardt household. After nine months of talking NASCAR, the holiday break is a welcome addition for Junior. Whether it is Christmas or New Year’s Eve, Dale Jr and his wife Amy embrace the festive spirit. However, there’s one tradition that the couple doesn’t like.
In a recent episode of Dale Jr. Download, Dale Jr. and Amy explained their dislike for New Year’s resolutions.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a very practical person when it comes to realistic decision-making. Travis Pastrana had joined in for a ‘healthy’ discussion on how the party must go on into the new year. They spoke about drinking a lot, enjoying late into the night, and parties before the age of social media. Earnhardt Jr. and Amy were having a candid conversation when the former asked, “Did you make any New Year’s resolution?”
While fans expected the couple to answer about a positive resolution, the couple’s answers pointed in a different direction. Amy Earnhardt explained, “I’ve never done that, to be honest. I don’t believe in like, ‘Okay… It’s one day to the next and now I am supposed to change my whole life.’” One part of these resolutions is to quit drinking, something some people decide to take up when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. However, for Amy Earnhardt, this isn’t the case. “I don’t believe in dry January.”
The strength of their relationship is the love and humor they shared, like the time when Amy opened up about the ‘filthy lifestyle’ of her husband. When Earnhardt Jr. laughed at her for saying “I don’t think people who do that (set new year resolutions) should be trusted.”, she questioned over why he laughed. She knew Dale Earnhardt Jr. so well that she said, “You don’t like rules in general. Why would you make resolutions or rules for yourself?”
Dale picked up from this point and said, “Oh man I am so disappointed when I hear that. When somebody tells me that they are taking a month off, I’m like ‘Just quit altogether’. What’s this 1 month Bu**S**t?” But Dale Earnhardt Jr. came clean to Amy saying he did try to take up a resolution! “I tried it back when I was smoking cigarettes and stuff like that. And I would be like ‘You know, I’m gonna quit smoking, right?’” he said. Notably, Junior once spoke about how drinking and smoking helped relieve his stress at parties back when he used to drive in NASCAR. With the races taking place over the weekend, Junior took to partying on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Recalling the incident, Junior once said, “I would sustain from drinking or something for a couple of weeks and the results didn’t change for me. Then I’d go party with my buddies or something or have friends over on a Tuesday night and we’d damn kick a** on the race weekend. And I was just like, maybe I’m just one of the old guards, I need to drink and smoke some cigarettes to kick a**.” It was one of the things he bonded over Martin Truex Jr. early on in the latter’s career.
A friendship formed over mutual interests

As Dale Earnhardt Jr. emphasized, he embraced the party lifestyle back when he raced, and he was unapologetic about it. Along the way, he found a close friend in NASCAR, one who recently retired; Martin Truex Jr. In the early 2000s when Martin Truex Jr. had just burst onto the scene, he moved to North Carolina and began living in Dale Jr.’s house. That’s when they began playing video games all night long.

Recalling their time together, Dale Jr. reminisced, “I bought four identical computers, and a year goes down the road; all that crap is obsolete. Four brand-new computers come back in the house; we’re in there upgrading, updating, installing; everybody’s got a wheel. I mean, we had it set up. We had a lot of fun; we raced all night long, slept all day, ate junk, drank beer, and he drank Captain; that’s his drink; he’s a Captain Morgan guy.”
At the same time, Dale Jr. mentored the young rookies in NASCAR, and it seemed to bring results. MTJ won two NASCAR Xfinity championships back-to-back, in 2004 and 2005 with Dale Jr. owned Chance 2 Motorsports. Now, with MTJ retiring from NASCAR, it’s one of the things Dale Jr. looks back on fondly, perhaps even being glad that he didn’t make certain New Year resolutions.
