Ever since NASCAR introduced the playoff format, it has been a constant talking point of controversy. They originally introduced it to make the races more interesting and drive up TV ratings till the end of the season. However, it has only pushed away fans further from the sport. Recently, Darian Gilliam of Black Flags Matter explained how Dale Jr and Denny Hamlin spoke their minds about the playoff system in place.

Gilliam tweeted, “Denny Hamlin and Dale Jr have expressed their displeasure with NASCAR’s Playoff System. Figured most fans and drivers tolerated it at this point but them speaking during the off-season shows this is still a hot topic after its 9th season of existence.”

The playoff system added confusion to the sport and evermore also made the TV ratings drop over the years. Several people have spoken against the system in place. Sure, it’s nothing like winning a championship, like in the days of Dale Earnhardt Sr or Kyle Petty. Back then, it used to be a points system. Where the driver with the highest points won the championship. Moreover, another thing to point out is how the championship four races are just a single race to determine the champion of that season.

Denny Hamlin had suggested expanding the championship four to a three-race format. So that would give everyone involved a fair shot at the title. If anything, the sport should start listening to its fans and what they have to suggest about the sport. Even Dale Earnhardt Jr. said, “I wish we could figure out a way to make that championship moment, not an all-or-nothing three-hour affair…I’ve really warmed up to everything else we’ve done. It took me a long time because I was too much of traditionalist. But I still feel like there’s got to be a better scenario for the final moment.”
