The Earnhardt ancestry is synonymous with NASCAR. Following Dale Earnhardt‘s tragic death at the 2001 Daytona 500, his legacy has been carried on by the subsequent generations including his son Dale Jr, and his siblings. In a similar fashion, the Intimidator’s grandson, Jeffrey Earnhardt, is also looking to leave his mark on the sport in style. However, with his career resembling a journeyman, he has only settled with a team for a while.

In 2023, Jeffrey Earnhardt started in 25 Xfinity Series races with Alpha Prime Racing. Competing part-time, he raced in the #44 and #45 cars but failed to produce a single top-10 or top-5 finish. Due to a poor run last season, there were concerns about him returning to the competition in 2024. However, some recent speculations suggest that Sam Hunt Racing might be courting the 34-year-old.

Last week, Alpha Prime Racing announced the signing of Brad Perez as a part-time driver for its #45 car. This was a sign for Jeffrey Earnhardt to make his move and search for another team that could make use of his services. Apart from the #45, the team has recruited Ryan Ellis and Brennan Poole, showing more ambition to challenge for the title.

Sam Hunt Racing is one of the emerging contenders for Jeffrey Earnhardt’s signature. Jeffrey Earnhardt raced for the team in 2022, although it turned out to be a disappointing debut.

While the team plans to field two full-time cars in 2024, it has recently announced Corey Heim as a part-time driver for the #26. The Truck Series driver’s complete Xfinity schedule, apart from a start in Las Vegas, is a mystery.

Some believed that Sam Hunt Racing would opt for something other than another part-time driver. However, from what the events have suggested, Earnhardt and Heim could share the duties of the #26 car. Heim is the only driver to be announced by Sam Hunt Racing for its 2024 season.

Despite the links, Sam Hunt Racing isn’t the only team searching for a part-time driver. Jeffrey Earnhardt has been previously linked to spots at Kaulig Racing, Rick Ware Racing, and AM Racing. But there could be a specific factor that could dissuade the 34-year-old from racing for these teams.

The 2024 silly season showed the scarcity of part-time driving spots and the lack of equipment in the Xfinity Series. Among title-contending teams, Joe Gibbs Racing, where Jeffrey Earnhardt has raced earlier, Kaulig Racing, and Stewart-Haas Racing, among the notable ones, have filled their rosters. Among the remaining teams, Rick Ware Racing, Sam Hunt Racing and BJ McLeod Motorsports could try to get Earnhardt.

However, one of the big problems might be the quality of equipment these teams provide. Jeffrey’s former team, Alpha Prime Racing, was never seen as a face for the championship. AM Racing, a viable destination for him, has been seen to be in the same boat regarding the quality of facilities and equipment. Sam Hunt Racing could also be classified in the same category, considering its performances in 2023.

However, with Truck Series finalist Corey Heim sealed for a part-time role, Sam Hunt Racing could create a great partnership in the #26 car. If Heim and Jeffrey Earnhardt shared the duties, it would give the team more room to add strong drivers from the competition or young blood from the grassroots. This is the most likely solution if the latest reports are anything to go by.
