Earlier at the Phoenix Raceway, William Byron triumphed for the second NASCAR race in a row. However, there were a fair number of fans who were unhappy with the way the race ended. With a few laps to go, there was a late caution, and that caused the race to head into overtime. Some fans were not happy with the overtime rule and felt that Kyle Larson should have won instead of Byron.
This also tied into a point raised by a certain Kyle Busch during the Daytona 500.
Recently, former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace weighed in on the issue where fans complained. According to them, there should be a specific number of laps and once they are completed, then the chequered flag should fly. By that logic, Kyle Larson should have won at the Phoenix Raceway.

But Wallace actually had a good argument in support of the overtime rules, citing the example of the Daytona 500.
The late great Dale Earnhardt was a big reason behind the overtime rule
According to Kenny Wallace, finishing a race under caution was far too common in his racing days. In fact, Dale Earnhardt Sr won his one and only Daytona 500, under caution. Obviously, none of the fans were too happy about this, despite the fact that the occasion was momentous. As a result, NASCAR bowed to the whims of the fans and introduced the overtime rule.
This saw any race extended by a few laps, in the event of a late caution so close to the final lap.
So could this be the fans’ fault that the rule was enforced? It is also possible that some people are mad because their favorite driver did not benefit from the overtime. After all, there aren’t too many complaints from the drivers, as their job is to put their heads down and charge.

A few weeks ago, Kyle Busch came agonizingly close to winning the Daytona 500 at last. Had there not been any overtime, he would have won, and he declared it so on his team radio. Some fans, though, were not very impressed with the insinuation and noted that he benefitted from the overtime, pretty often.
People just want to change things to change things. This conversation wouldn’t have been had if Kyle Busch didn’t mention it about the Daytona 500. He obviously forgot how many times it played into his favor and won races that way.

Needless to say, many joked that Busch ‘won’ the Daytona 500 in 2023. On the bright side, for the Richard Childress Racing driver, he has already got a win, but that was at the Auto Club Speedway. In the process, he broke the record for the most consecutive seasons with at least one win.
