The journey to success is sometimes bereft of close ones
Todd Gilliland’s performance this season has been impressive, with an average finish of 20.1, a significant improvement from his rookie season. After two seasons finishing 28th in the standings, sitting at 20th is a rare leap. His transition from Kyle Busch Motorsports, where he struggled to make a mark, to Front Row Motorsports has been a turning point.
Despite being left without a ride at 20, Gilliland landed with FRM, driving a truck in 2021, winning one race, and finishing seventh in the standings. His move to Cup racing has seen him secure one top-5 and eight top-10 finishes over three seasons. This progression is remarkable, especially considering his father, David Gilliland, owns Tricon Garage, a successful truck team. Why then, did Todd choose KHI Management?
In a recent interview with Bob Pockrass for FOX, the third-generation racer explained his decision. “There’s positives and negatives. For me, the biggest thing is having relationships within the sport. Growing up around the garage, knowing people for over ten years, even though I’ve been racing in the Cup Series for only three years, all that helps when talking to teams.”
He went on to add, “I’m with KHI Management now; for a while, my dad was managing me. It helps having a reputation in the garage.” This insight reveals the strategic thinking behind his decision, emphasizing that the NASCAR world is more like chess; A place where emotions have to be shown their rightful place.
Gilliland’s interview sheds light on his journey and decision-making process. He mentioned, “I’ve only run one race for my dad, and it was the truck race a couple of years ago, and we won it. So maybe that’s just how we go out for good — our one and only race together.” This heartfelt statement wasn’t just motivated by past events. His performance this year at Cup Series also has a role in #38’s good vibes.
