Matt DiBenedetto and Rackley W.A.R. went their separate ways mid-season in 2023, with three races still on the calendar. Now, there’s a buzz around his latest tweet, a cryptic pen emoji, leaving everyone wondering if he’s on the brink of sealing a deal with a new team in a new series. Fans on Reddit have stumbled upon a tantalizing possibility of whether Spire Motorsports will scoop him up for their No. 78 charter or not.
Flashback to September 2023: Spire Motorsports shelled out a cool US$40 million to take over the #78 charter from Live Fast Motorsports, aiming to put a third car on the track in the 2024 Xfinity Series. The spot was once B.J. McLeod’s, the guy behind Live Fast Motorsports. But as the Xfinity Series looms on the horizon, and with the car ownership changing, fans are abuzz, wondering if Matt DiBenedetto might just be the mystery driver set to join the Spire Motorsports squad.

The tale of Car No. 78 is quite the journey. Back in 2020, B.J. McLeod took the wheel, announcing his squad, B.J. McLeod Motorsports, would dip their toes in the Cup Series, teaming up with Matt Tifft. After rebranding to Live Fast Motorsports, even though they leaned towards Chevrolet in 2020, they took Ford for a spin in the Cup Series.

The No. 78 further kicked off the 2021 season, with McLeod finishing in P23 at the Daytona 500 and wrapping up the year 32nd in the points race. The following year, he started at P27 at the 2022 Daytona 500 but found himself in 36th place in points by the season’s end. Then, on December 1, 2022, the team switched gears from Ford to Chevy for the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series, and McLeod started that season with a P30 finish. Midway through the year, on July 12, it was Sheldon Creed who took the reins of the No. 78 at Kansas.
Further in July 2023, when B.J. McLeod Motorsports and Anthony Alfredo teamed up with The Steele Group and the Green Beret Foundation, they took the No. 78 Xfinity Chevy Camaro for a spin at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
However, later in September, Live Fast Motorsports parted ways with its charter and planned to keep the show on the road as a part-time open team in 2024. In November, Matt Tifft decided to seek new pastures, leaving the team. These events open the door even wider for Matt DiBenedetto. It looks like the stars could be aligning for him to take over the reins of the #78, making this more than just a shot in the dark.
