As the 2023 NASCAR season gets closer with each passing day, Petty GMS recently announced that they had prepared a chassis already. However, they did not name which driver it would be. Instead, they put that task on the fans, asking who they thought was the car assigned to. Furthermore, they also asked them which track the fans thought this chassis would debut at.
During the latter half of the 2022 season, it was announced that Jimmie Johnson would return to the Cup Series. Naturally, someone took a shot at the question raised by Petty GMS. But instead, they failed miserably. The fan mentioned that it would be Jimmie Johnson at the Daytona 500.

That is when the fan realized they were talking about the Clash at the Coliseum. However, once again, they guessed it would be the seven-time Cup Series champion.
Once again, only to be proved wrong. Finally, the team just decided to drop the names racing with the chassis. They replied to the tweet, “Correct race, incorrect driver. Only Erik and Noah will be competing in The Clash so you got a 50/50 shot of getting it right the next time.” In the end, it turned out that the team was talking about Erik Jones and Noah Gragson and not Johnson.

Yup, that’s right. The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion decided he wasn’t old enough to retire and instead decided to jump back in. He would be racing as a part-time driver and also would be the part-owner of the Petty GMS team. After spending a while in IndyCar, he decided it was time to go back to where he was the most successful throughout his career.
It was just two years ago when Johnson had decided to retire from stock car racing and head into the open-wheel universe of IndyCar. However, his two years at Chip Ganassi Racing were a shadow of how good he used to be in stock cars. Suffering from issues with adaptability around the car and a plethora of crashes and other problems, Johnson was in a slump out there. All he needed was that one sign of hope to head back into NASCAR.
