Another day and another lost believer in Martin Truex Jr. After what seemed like an eternity, Truex Jr finally managed another top-10 finish in the 2023 season. But as it appears, the Las Vegas result did not impress many. The latest to lose trust in him to climb back up the pit is the star driver of Spire Motorsports.

Discussing the #19 driver’s chances going forward, the opinions of LaJoie’s “Stacking Pennies” podcast crew were divided. But LaJoie himself was clear in his argument. Unfortunately, it isn’t one that favors Truex Jr.

Back when the regular season came to an end at Daytona, the 2017 Cup Series champion was a favorite to win the championship for many. Even legends like Dale Earnhardt Jr had backed the 43-year-old to pull off something incredible and take his Cup Series trophy home. But the scenes that unfolded in the playoffs were completely twisted for Joe Gibbs Racing. With the driver failing to take a single top-15 finish in the first 6 playoff races, his P9 finish at Las Vegas came as a sweet relief. But clearly, that hasn’t been enough to put him back up on the mantle.

Discussing the race weekend, the podcast crew that included LaJoie, Ryan “Skip” Flores, and Danielle Trotta voiced its take on the driver. Danielle, SiriusXM co-host, expressing her frustration with crew chief James Small, the Spire Motorsports star said, “I am not putting my money on the #19 to go to be racing for anything substantial in Phoenix.”

Though the upcoming tracks at Homestead-Miami and Martinsville are favorable for the former champion, LaJoie did not seem to have a lot of confidence in him. But one person who did was Skip, Team Penske‘s tire changer.

Had it not been the bad pit call from his crew chief, Martin Truex Jr could have finished much higher up in the standings at Vegas. All the tracks in the playoff’s round 3 are favorable ones for the driver. Now that he has failed to make the best use of the first of them, he still has two shots at setting things right. Should he pull off perfect runs over the next weekends, he can still find the light.

Not wanting to throw the driver out of the mix yet, Skip talked about how he only had to be just above the cutline to make it to the Championship 4. In his words, “They can hit at any point in time and go win the championship. Like, they’re still well. They’re still above the cut line right now. […] You can get there by one point to Phoenix and hit it right.” Despite his crewmate Danielle’s opinion that such a drastic turn would not be possible, Skip was affixed to his opinion.

The tire changer’s own driver, Ryan Blaney is fighting for his spot in the Championship 4 too. As fate could have it, Truex Jr.’s spot in the final round could possibly come at the cost of the Team Penske driver. Despite his confidence in the competition, Skip certainly wouldn’t be a fan of that scenario. Let us know what you think Truex Jr.’s chances to make it to Phoenix are!
