The old adage goes, “It’s every man for himself.” While some individuals may discard it as a part of yesteryears. But the adage and its value were reinforced during the Xfinity race on Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, as circumstances escalated between Justin Haley and Daniel Hemric of Kaulig Racing while the race was underway.

The incident seemed to have drawn huge attention as both the veterans as well as the fans of NASCAR had vented their disappointment about the lack of fair play between the drivers and how teammates failed to support each other, as personal ambitions seem to overpower their judgment. Even veteran spotter Brett Griffin expressed his disapproval on the latest episode of Door Bumper Clear.

It was just a week back when Justin Haley of Kaulig Racing had been showered with adulations. The driver had pulled off a dramatic finish in the inaugural race at the Chicago Street Race. While most of the veterans had stumbled to get a grip, Haley braved the wet conditions, the unpolished asphalt, and the tight corners. The Kaulig Racing driver finished second just behind the Kiwi victor and ahead of Chase Elliott.

Coming back to the recent Xfinity Race, an incident occurred during the overtime of the race, when Justin Haley dropped from the lead, as he ran out of fuel. However, it was Haley’s teammate, Daniel Hemric, who came to his rescue and pulled up to Haley’s rear bumper, seizing the second position.

However, during the final laps of the race when Hemric tried to speed past John Hunter Nemechek, the leader of the race, but failed to do so, as Haley not only failed to pass Nemechek but also blocked Hemric. His hopes of clinching the chequered instantly crumbled down. Daniel Hemric finished 2nd while Justin Haley finished 4th in the race.

Owing to this incident, Kaulig Racing spotter, in the episode of Door Bumper Clear, in a sardonic tone expressed his displeasure. He exclaimed, “I think Daniel Hemric did one thing very wrong and very detrimental to his finish. I think he trusted Justin Haley. I watched that restart and I am sitting there and I am like man, Kaulig Racing is really in a good spot. If the caution doesn’t come out and it looked like one of the Kaulig Racing cars is going to win.”

“But when the caution comes out, it’s-man this is gonna get tricky and you got two Kaulig cars outside with Parker clinging on them in the behind, and then on the bottom you have got John Hunter on the front row and obviously a Kaulig car behind them. And when Chandler [Smith] and Parker[Retzalff] both run out of gas the top line is dead in the water.”

However, Griffin, who recently created a lot of controversy ahead of the Chicago race, expressed the fact that the incidents during the restart of the race unfolded in quick succession, that it became almost hard to interpret what had happened during the race. However, he also added that he is yet to get a concrete understanding of the race as he is yet to talk to drivers.

But he asserted, “I think this is the case of Daniel Hemric feeling the heat off. I have got to win a race just now. Justin Haley feeling the same heat that I have to win a race right now. I am getting a stellar effort in Chicago, I am a great drafter.”

“If I can clear Daniel Hemric here I think I have a chance of winning and I just think for Kaulig Racing it just kind of sucks, because he could have won the race, and the way it played out it didn’t,” Griffin concluded.

Nevertheless, the way the whole incident had unwrapped itself portrayed how the team spirit failed to assert itself between the drivers. While it seemed that the drivers may have talked it out between them, the lack of better judgment turned out to be detrimental for Kaulig Racing in its totality as they missed a golden opportunity of a victory.
