Is Michael Jordan's involvement enough to shake NASCAR's stronghold on the racing world?

The hottest topic in the NASCAR community right now is the lawsuit against NASCAR. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports have filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and its founder, the France family, after they previously refused to sign the charter deals. The teams have accused the sporting organization of operating without transparency, stifling competition, and controlling the sport of stock car racing in ways that unfairly benefit them. This, according to the teams, comes at the expense of team owners, drivers, sponsors, partners, and fans.

The teams stated many reasons for NASCAR’s unjust monopoly, like NASCAR owning most of the tracks, teams not being allowed to race in other stock car competitions, and even the car parts, they buy have to be from NASCAR-approved vendors. However, amid this, the question is how will the France family react to such accusations? Will they retaliate and be petty to the teams on the racetrack? Recently, a NASCAR insider has rubbished these possibilities!

Would NASCAR scrutinize the teams amid the lawsuit battle?

Many wondered how would NASCAR take to such an attack on them. Well, precedence has shown that the France family doesn’t like to be cornered. Back in the 1960s, NASCAR showed they weren’t too keen on unions. They actually kicked out two of their most popular drivers, Curtis Turner and Tim Flock, just for trying to start one. However, this time it is them vs one of America’s, or rather the world’s greatest athletes.

There was the possibility of the teams getting ousted from the competition after losing the charters. But can NASCAR afford to lose a name as big as Michael Jordan, who is the co-owner of the 23XI team? If not ousting, would NASCAR be extra harsh with them in races? Like failing their inspection, issuing them pit road penalties, or digging extra deep into other rule violations. This could be detrimental to co-owner Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick, both fighting for the championship. However, NASCAR spotter Brett Griffin has rubbished such possibilities as he doesn’t think NASCAR would stoop that low.

In the recent episode of Door Bumper Clear, he said, “NASCAR owns the officials the officials work for NASCAR and so people in the media said that teams that were in this lawsuit with NASCAR could potentially face more rigorous technical processes pre and post-race I don’t believe that’s true.” According to Griffin, everything is technologically driven and it’s not possible for officials to purposefully penalize the teams.

Griffin was clearly upset by even the possibility of such allegations on the racetrack officials. “It’s very technology driven these days. You know this isn’t 1950 anymore where you look at something and go I don’t like the way that looks fix it. Everything is now is measured by lasers and I thought it was kind of a cheap shot for people to say to NASCAR officials, who work more hours than any of us, that there could be some shady stuff going on in there,” He added.

However, subtly, NASCAR could just as easily influence the playoff picture. Well, it would be tough with Hamlin, as he has a +30 points cushion entering Talladega. But for Reddick, things could end badly, as he is only + 14 points above the cutline, a small penalty could end his championship hopes. There is also a strong possibility of this courtroom drama ending up on the racetrack. What are the options for preventing it?

Further in the conversation, Griffin said, “If that’s the case if we truly believe as a sport, our fan base, our sponsors, our teams believe that could happen should NASCAR Farm out its technical process and the officiating from the booth to a high integrity third party that could oversee that process to remove that conspiracy theory from even existing.”

While Griffin’s solution seems unlikely to be implemented, the technological advancements in the sport might still keep things fair. Gone are the days when NASCAR used to manually measure pit road speed. Now it’s digital and teams have access to all the data. However, things are about to get heated between the two parties. “I don’t have a dog in the fight. I hope it’s whatever is best for the sport. I mean, it’s the most famous athlete in American history taking on one of the largest juggernauts in professional sports,” Griffin added. Will 23XI win this battle?

NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace doesn’t think so! According to him, things are about to get nasty. In a recent video, he said, “NASCAR cannot let Michael Jordan Front Row win this. Because if they win this, that means NASCAR are going to have to give up millions and millions and millions and millions of dollars.” According to Wallace, the teams are going to have to walk on eggshells and be extra careful. “I just think this gon’ be a deal over 23XI and Front Row will have to walk on eggshells. But I think… I almost think they’re martyrs. That’s ugly saying, but that means they’re willing to kill themselves to get this right,” Wallace added.
