Austin Hill is a man waiting in the wings. The Richard Childress Racing driver has been a standout in the Xfinity and the Truck Series in recent years. This is despite not making it to a Championship 4 race yet. But he would now be eyeing a full-time seat in the big league.

Hill has had a brief taste of driving a Cup Series car with Beard Motorsports since 2022. This has been enough for him to understand the nuances between NASCAR’s different series. Experts would know that the devil is in the details. And Austin Hill is looking to adapt and adapt quickly.

Austin Hill pinpoints what makes each car type in NASCAR unique

Austin Hill engaged in a conversation with Mike Davis and Dale Earnhardt Jr on the latter’s podcast “The Dale Jr. Download.” He gave several insights into his racing career so far, including the turning point in 2019 that paved the way for more recent success. Crucially though, he gave his take on how each NASCAR series is a separate learning curve.

The 29-year-old hinted at the driver being more in charge in an Xfinity car. He said, “I think the Xfinity car, you can definitely control your own destiny and you can make things happen. The truck obviously we know how that is and then I think the Cup car fits right there in the middle.”

Hill also revealed a particular aspect of the Cup car that he has found difficult to master. “I think that you stall out a lot quicker with the Cup car and that’s something I have had to get used to. … It just doesn’t happen as easily as it does with the Xfinity car. With the Xfinity car, you can just drag people back so easily if you have that gap in front of you,” Hill went on to explain. Clearly, he has his work cut out for the future.

The man from Winston offered a neat summary of how he felt about drafting in the different series. “I think the Cup car is a combination of the Xfinity side and the truck side as far as how the drafting works there,” he revealed. Moreover, Austin Hill has got a fair idea of what will be coming his way if he makes it full-time in the Cup Series.

Austin Hill can rightfully take pride in his 2023 Regular Season Xfinity title. He bagged the same honor in the 2020 Truck Series as well. However, he knows the Cup Series is a different ball game altogether.

Hill admitted, “The Cup side is just tough. Everybody from first all the way back to 38th, they’re just good. It makes it really, really hard.” But if anybody knows how to start strong in a new environment, it is Austin Hill. The 2022 Xfinity Rookie Award is a valid indication of this. Additionally, it can only be a positive thing that he knows the magnitude of the task ahead. Hopefully, Austin Hill will control his destiny in the coming days too.
