Shane Van Gisbergen, the 2016, 2021, and 2022 Supercars Champion possesses extensive experience in various forms of Motorsports Racing. He has been behind the wheel of different GT cars while also having dirt racing on his resume. Over the years, he has developed different unique skills which he uses in different forms is racing.

One skill that has garnered attention is his utilization of the right leg for braking during Chicago Street Races. Seeing this, and his prowess on the street circuit, many praised his remarkable accomplishment. Kyle Busch, however, held a differing opinion.

Kyle Busch Gives His Assessment for SVG’s Win at Chicago

After the post-race interview, many drivers, including Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, praised SVG for his impressive win. Kenny Wallace even went on to compare him with Kyle Larson as he races in many formats of racing, including dirt.

But Richard Childress Racing driver Kyle Busch, on the other hand, believes SVG had a huge advantage because of his V8 Supercars experience. During the press conference, when asked how hard it would have been for the rookie to win his first race, Kyle replied, “Obviously being a rookie to NASCAR, yes.” Kyle Busch said. “But not being whatsoever a rookie in road racing and the expertise he has.”

“That’s what he is grown up doing. That’s what he has done in his whole life.”

“He’s done in bigger, heavier stock cars, not lighter-weight GT cars or IMSA cars or something like that. So he is probably four, five, or eight years ahead of us in this sort of car and the things that he’s done with the V8 supercar.”

When questioned about Kyle Busch’s assessment of his V8 Supercar experience and its potential impact on his performance, Shane Van Gisbergen responded by drawing comparisons between the V8 Supercars and the Next Gen cars in NASCAR. He stated that his experience in V8 Supercars has indeed helped him perform better, but they are not the same.

He said, “I don’t really know the answer. Definitely a street circuit I’m more comfortable in, and come back next year a lot of those guys will be quicker. The way the car achieves its speed is very different with the aero under the floor rather than over the top with the spoilers and wings like we have.”

SvG discussed the distinction between the two cars and specifically compared the rear differential of the Next Gen cars. For those who are unaware, the differential system enables the drive wheels to rotate at varying speeds, which is crucial when navigating turns. During a turn, the outside wheel needs to cover a greater distance, necessitating a faster rotation compared to the inside wheels.

“Then of course the rear diff. We have a locked diff, and this car has an open one and it just turns so much better than what we have. So yeah, huge differences in cars, but I think the street races, the more they do here, the better they’ll get. You could see guys leaving a lot on the table on corner exits to the wall, where I wasn’t afraid of getting close.”

Shane clarified the contrasting philosophies between racing on bumpy Chicago tracks and tracks in Australia.

“It was crazy how bumpy this track was,” Shane said. “But it’s so powerful, the underfloor, that they do everything they can to activate it, so you can see everyone just hitting the bumps and riding so hard; whereas we in Australia ride so high and soft to try and make the car compliant. So very different philosophy.”
