Allegiances in NASCAR are a lot more fluid than what the outside would apprehends. Drivers are bound to their teams for obvious reasons. But they also live by their manufacturer, rarely if ever, switching from one to another during their career (at least willfully). Dale Earnhardt Jr for that matter has been a Chevrolet guy all his career.
Another look at the contact between Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain.

Dale Earnhardt Jr is one of the most influential NASCAR drivers in modern times and is considered a legend of the sport. His long career was crowded with wins and trophies. Moreover, his time as a pundit and podcaster since his retirement is treasured by fans of the sport as he offers great insights and inputs from the sport.
Dale Jr also commentates during races and most people love the nuggets of information he offers during each significant part of the race. But there are some sections of fans who have been unhappy with the way Dale Jr talks about Hendrick Motorsports and Chase Elliott.
In a Twitter thread, a fan wrote below a video of the Ross Chastain-Chase Elliott contact incident,
C’mon @DaleJr. We all know your Team Hendrick and they do no wrong but why should Ross lift to give Chase the spot? Thx @JeffBurton for telling like it is.

A similar vein was followed by another fan – and they seemingly accused the veteran of siding with Hendrick and the Chevy’s in contention. Junior came across the comments and replied, “I was only trying to explain what one champ contender needed or could do to beat the other. The manufacturers are purely coincidence. I can’t help what car they drive.”
But he also added “No joke tho. I been a Chevy guy all my life. But in the booth I really try to care less what car they drive. I’ll pay more attention to see if I unintentionally bring some bias in there. If so I’ll work on it.”

It’s a little rich for people to want him to completely dissociate himself from the sport and the team he worked for, for so many years. A little bit of bias always enters even in the most objective people.
How many of his predictions did Dale Earnhardt Jr get right?
On the Dale Jr Download podcast, Dale Jr sat down with his co-hosts to give their predictions for the Championship. Going on the Cup Series, the Hall of Famer made some bold statements – unfortunately, they didn’t pan out well for him.

Dale said, “Joe Logano, for me, hit or miss. He’s not a threat, I mean he could win. All these guys are good, right? When I look at this, Christopher Bell has done when it needed to get done. Ross Chastain is crazy, if he’s within reach, he’s gonna wall ride to the win. Chase Elliott, you just never know they’re very strong. Joey, to me, is the weakest.”
Dale Jr highlights that his doubts about Logano’s ability to win on Sunday were primarily because of the lack of consistency in Team Penske. His showing on Sunday was an answer to those doubts. A great race where he led for the majority of the time, and was helped (in some way or the other) by the incident between Elliott and Chastain.

Logano pulled off a great victory, and Dale Jr would be proud of the work the young man did despite Junior’s doubts about his ability to win on Sunday.
