NASCAR legend and seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson recently made headlines as he announced Legacy Motor Club’s departure from Chevrolet, a brand he has been associated with throughout his illustrious career. Johnson‘s decision to join forces with Toyota for the 2024 season has not only surprised fans but also sparked accusations of cheating and raised questions about brand loyalty.
The news of Johnson’s move was initially announced in May when Legacy Motor Club, co-owned by Johnson and Maury Gallagher, revealed their partnership with Toyota. Legacy Motor Club will become the third Cup organization to align with Toyota, joining Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing. The shift from Chevrolet to Toyota marks a significant change in Johnson’s racing career, as he leaves behind a legacy with Chevrolet that spans over almost 700 Cup Series races.

David Wilson, President of Toyota Racing Development (TRD), expressed his excitement about Johnson joining the Toyota family—a behemoth with annual revenue exceeding $200 billion. In a recent interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Wilson confirmed that Johnson would be driving a Toyota Camry in 2024. While he did not provide further details about Johnson’s plans, he declared, “100 percent. Yes, you will see him in a Toyota.”
Toyota’s confirmation of Johnson’s involvement in the Toyota Camry further solidifies his racing future. David Wilson’s statement leaves little doubt about Johnson’s intentions, as he will continue to race, albeit part-time, in the NASCAR Cup Series for the 2024 season. This marks a historic milestone for Johnson, who will embark on his 22nd year in the series.

As news of Johnson’s move broke, fans took to social media to express their mixed emotions and opinions. Some fans felt betrayed by Johnson’s decision, expressing their disappointment in the lack of brand loyalty. One fan tweeted, “How are you going to win 7 championships in a Chevy and then turn your back on them and go drive a damn Toyota? At some point, brand loyalty has to mean something. Your team being a Toyota is one thing, but you driving one is another. Never thought I would see the day.”

Another fan, @LegacyMotorclub, expressed frustration, stating, “F*#K @ToyotaRacing, and I am highly disappointed in @JimmieJohnson and @LegacyMotorclub making this switch. Unreal thinking Jimmie Johnson will be on TRD next season! 🤬” These reactions reflect the sentiment among some fans who believe that Johnson’s move is a betrayal of his racing roots.

On the other hand, some fans seemed less concerned about the brand loyalty aspect and more focused on the impact of the move. One fan tweeted, “Honestly couldn’t give two shits about Petty. But JJ in a Camry hurts.” The comment reflects the disappointment fans feel about seeing Johnson race in a Toyota, despite their personal feelings towards specific brands.
Fans should be mad at @TeamChevy not @JimmieJohnson. If they wanted him to stay they’d spend the money. Seems like a smart deal by @ToyotaRacing to get a world class ambassador and expand their car count.
