With the 2024 Cup Series season well underway, all eyes are on the top 16 to see who will make it into the Playoffs. While track favorites like Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson have already solidified their push for the round of 16, the most popular driver of 2023 is yet to bring certainty to the #9 camp in that regard. Chase Elliott may be in the top ten after Bristol, but the Hendrick Motorsports fans eagerly wait for their star driver to score a win and secure a spot in the Playoffs. However, despite the performance pressure piling on Elliot, NASCAR is certainly reaping the benefits of the #9’s 2024 campaign.
Is Chase Elliott the secret behind NASCAR’s viewership redemption?
It’s no secret that NASCAR’s viewership numbers have been on the decline in recent years. The sport has tried its best to boost numbers by shaking things up with the dirt race at Bristol and the Clash at the L.A. Coliseum. Unfortunately, none of these tactics seemed to work out, until 2024. This time around, viewership numbers are on the rise, with many believing the root cause of the growth to be the Netflix series. However, Chase Elliott’s exciting journey this year could also play a major role.

Cindy Yen, a NASCAR viewership analyst on X shared interesting statistics about the rise in viewership numbers this year. She shared, “#NASCAR had 3.809mil viewers at Bristol on Sunday. Some tidbits: – Higher viewership than last year’s race #5 (Atlanta, 3.422mil) but lower than 2022 (Atlanta 4.003mil)” Yen went on to share that the viewership numbers at Bristol were also higher this year compared to the dirt in 2023. Overall, the 2024 season seemed to have an edge over the 2023 season but fell short of the 2022 season’s statistics.

Overall viewership numbers per race had been on the rise, prompting Yen to point out a few key reasons. She stated, “Lots of potential causes for viewership going back up. Perhaps new Netflix fans are equalizing the loss in previous viewers. But I still think viewership is “returning to baseline” bc Elliott is not out. Still lots of races left to see data.” With Elliott sitting in P9 after the first five races, fans are still uncertain if the Most Popular Driver will make it into the playoffs without a race win.
Viewership is on pace with 2021 and 2022.
