Chase Elliott has a mountain to climb if he is to make it through to the playoffs in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series. The former champion has his sights set on Michigan for a strong points finish and hopefully a win. Winning a race seems to be the only way forward for the 27-year-old who is 40 points behind the cut with just four races to go. So, it’s a good thing that he absolutely adores the Michigan track. In the pre-race presser, Elliott was asked to describe the Michigan track and the Dawsonville resident only sang its praises.

Elliott said that since the time the asphalt was laid on the circuit, it has held up beautifully with the least degradation. He has said there has been a negligible loss of grip from the time of the track’s inception to now and that it has not become abrasive in any way. The former champion was so impressed with the track that he suggested the same asphalt be used for roads and highways around the United States.

When asked to describe the Michigan track, Chase said, “Yeah, I can try. When I say that, I think I am more referring to… heck, I don’t know what year this thing was paved, but it had to be 2012, 11, somewhere in there. Correct me if I am wrong, but that would be around my guess.  Whatever asphalt they used, I wish they used it on the roads and the highways around the United States because it just doesn’t seem to age.”

“It doesn’t seem to give away a lot of grip. It is changing color a little bit, but it certainly doesn’t seem like it has become any more abrasive, or the grip level has gone down any,” he added. Elliott would then go on to describe the integral parts of the Michigan track and how he plans to navigate through them on Sunday.

“For that reason, the middle of the track is the dominant place on the road. The bottom is too flat to run at pace for a lengthy period of time. And the middle, because of the way the track is shaped, is the fastest way through and it has enough banking to make it work. I think the hope is, and I think it will age eventually, is to keep working it up and have a wider racing groove with the right amount of banking to run,” the former Cup Series champion explained.

No matter how much he might enjoy driving on the track, though, Chase Elliott has a mammoth task awaiting him on Sunday. Qualifying through points to the playoffs seems far-fetched so the only thing he has to do is win.

Saturday’s qualifying ended with Elliott poised to start on the grid from 10th place on the main grid. The 27-year-old suffered a serious leg injury earlier on in the season which saw him miss six races. Right now, he finds himself in a precarious position outside the playoff spots with just four races to go.

Ever since his return, Elliott has been saying that he needs to win a race to make it to the playoffs and he is not budging. “My stance has been the same since I got back,” he said after qualifying, “I think we need to win.”

“So, and like I have said a thousand times since I have been back, I think gaining a lot of points and contending for wins is very much one in the same. It’s not coincidence that the guys that are high up in points have race wins,” he added.

Ever since he came back from injury, Chase Elliott has struggled to deliver strong performances on the track. Right now, fans and experts are of the belief that it would be close to a miracle if he does make it through to the last 16. However, he is a former champion, and he is a proven race winner. It will be interesting to see how he performs at Michigan.
