Lately in NASCAR, it’s been all about the underdog story. While it was Chris Buescher who captivated the community’s imagination with his back-to-back wins at Richmond and Michigan, this time around his fellow Ford driver Michael McDowell emerged victorious after a tough battle with Chase Elliott.

The Front Row Motorsports driver’s win not only was a statement, yet again proving the manufacturer’s capabilities, but the driver also speared his way into the playoffs with this stellar performance as he racked up his 2nd career win at the grandest stage of them all—the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

While one man secured his playoff berth, another saw the win slip away despite being within his reach. Elliott, who needed a win to make it into the playoffs, yet again had to wait for the next race as the #34 Ford distanced himself from the #9 Chevy, bringing his and his team’s first-ever stage win in Stage 1, and then his second career win.

Not only did the community witness another David vs Goliath story, but the race had many underlying currents to it. Heading into the race, both McDowell and Elliott were pretty much outside the playoff bubble with both drivers needing points or a win to make their way into the top 16.

While both were lauded as road racing specialists, the numbers favored the 2020 Cup Series champion who is a 7-time road course winner was a clear favorite among fans compared to the #34 driver who just had his 2nd career win. But McDowell’s win was like a shock treatment for Elliott fans as they had to vent out their frustration seeing the win slip away from their favorite driver on the race winner.

Frenzied fans trashed the Indy triumphant, deeming it as a fluke as they denounced his win as if he wasted a playoff spot.
