Only a handful of drivers can match the level of respect Tony Stewart gets in NASCAR. The three-time Cup Series winner has an aura about him, and his feats in the sport demand respect for it. He continues to inspire the younger generations of drivers even after his retirement from full-time racing in the Cup. Well, his influence is not limited to the top flight of stock car racing either.

Tony’s brainchild, the Camping World SRX series has been a center of attraction for many stars past and present. The latest addition to join their ranks will be his No. 14. The proficient road course driver, Chase Briscoe made his debut in the star-studded tourney and is overjoyed by the chance to race against his team owner and idol.

“He was my absolute hero,” said Chase Briscoe, raring to go against Tony Stewart

Everything about last night’s SRX race had a tinge of Tony Stewart. He led the 75 laps and won it at his own Eldora Speedway. Going back to his younger days of dominance on the tracks, the Stewart-Haas Racing owner was an absolute force of nature to deal with on Thursday. Briscoe got to experience some of it up close as well after ages of manifesting this very day and raving about it in the build-up to the race.

“You’re running the SRX race tomorrow night at Eldora. How did that opportunity come about for you? When’d you find out about it, and kind of what’s your outlook for tomorrow night?” asks a media correspondent in a virtual interview before the race.

Yeah, I’m super excited.” answers the #14 Mustang driver. Briscoe didn’t precisely get the race he would have hoped for, with some engaging scenarios on the track and a respectable finish for him left unfulfilled. But before the race started, the 28-year-old was raring to race alongside the legend himself. Being an Indiana native, it is only natural for Chase to grow up idolizing Tony, who is one of the best-ever drivers to hail from one of the hubs of racing in the country.

“You know, I’ve never got a race against Tony and obviously, everybody here knows that he was my absolute hero. So for me, that was the biggest draw. To run SRX was just… I wanted to be able to say that I raced against Tony at some point in my career and obviously know that that time was kind of dwindling down as he’s probably not going to ever come running out of hurry.” claims an exuberant Chase Briscoe.

As the conference goes on, Briscoe reveals further details about being recruited as a driver into the series and what was the major reason behind his accepting the offer.

So the opportunity came super last minute.” resumes Chase Briscoe. Tony Stewart left no stone unturned in bringing out his best side at the iconic Eldora Speedway. Barely putting a foot wrong, the former IndyCar champion sped his way through all the stages of the race. Picking up wins in both heat races, he didn’t look back to stop as crashes marred the evening. Chase, on the other hand, was involved in the multi-car wreck that was a deja vu of the crash at Strafford that led to the suspension of Paul Tracy.

Explaining the process of arriving at Eldora, he says, “Last Thursday, I think, at like three o’clock. Hawk called me and was like, ‘Hey, we got an opening. Would you be interested in coming and running SRX or like we’re gonna try to announce it at seven or eight o’clock, whenever the TV window is tonight?”

“So it was super last minute like I said. I literally found out Thursday afternoon, so yeah, looking forward to High Point. It’s at Eldora which is super special to me in general and racing against my boss and hopefully can beat him at his own racetrack.”

Although he didn’t get a chance to get back to Tony Stewart on the dirt track, Chase Elliott will surely cherish the race as one of the most unforgettable moments of his life. The crash that ruined Briscoe’s night collected almost half of the grid as a consequence, affecting six of the 13 cars that were green-flagged. A lower radiator burst in Austin Dillon‘s car rendered the fluid on the track, and cars started piling up. As a result, Tony Kanaan, Dillon, and Biscoe had to pull out of the race prematurely.
