NASCAR made a historic jump into the world of racing with their participation in the world-famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. Chad Knaus, the Vice President of Competition at Hendrick Motorsports, who led the project, shared his views on the same in the latest edition of NASCAR Race Hub.

The NASCAR Le Mans project aimed to showcase the innovation and technology of the sport on the global stage. Knaus, renowned for his successful partnership with seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, served as the project leader overseeing every aspect of the venture. His experience and expertise were crucial in adapting the Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 into an endurance car fit for the demands of Le Mans. The decision to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans was a very bold and ambitious move for NASCAR. The collaboration between NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet portrayed the dedication of the stock car racing community to push boundaries and explore new horizons for the fans. The Garage 56 project born out of this partnership aimed to honor NASCAR’s 75th season and highlight its technological aspects at the very best level possible.

Chad Knaus, reflecting on the experience, expressed immense pride and joy in the team’s achievements. Knaus said, “It was an amazing experience and it was so much fun. I couldn’t be prouder and this isn’t a canned thing. This is the truth like IMSA, NASCAR, Goodyear, Chevrolet the effort that went into that, and then Hendrick Motorsports the way that our company put it together to represent all of our industry because we really took a well out of this weight on our shoulders because we wanted to do good for NASCAR and everybody that’s in stock car racing”.

The NASCAR Le Mans project showcased the courage and determination of the stock car racing community. The team’s admirable performance and emotional journey exemplified the spirit of NASCAR and its commitment to innovation. However, this project had more to offer. Beyond the excitement and emotions, the NASCAR Le Mans project let to valuable research. The collaboration of NASCAR’s expertise and the demands of endurance racing provided new insights and opportunities for growth for the future.

As we know Hendrick Motorsports is one of the most successful teams in NASCAR history and they played a vital role in the Le Mans program as well. The team provides the chassis, engine and technical support for the car. The team also adapted facilities and equipment to the specifications and regulations of their class. Knaus was really impressed and proud of the team’s commitment and innovative determination to make the car competitive and reliable in the 24-hour race. 

Chad Knaus said “When we went over there. I could not be prouder of the way that HMS responded to that call. It was really an awesome experience for me. I was just telling you guys during the break when they threw the checkered flag at the end of that 24 hours. I don’t know that I have been that emotional after a Cup win or a Cup Championship is just such a daunting task to do what we did over the last 360 days to be able to pull that off I’m really proud of it”.

As we can see, it has been a great experience for him to be a part of this milestone for NASCAR. Knaus said he hoped NASCAR’s involvement in Le Mans would inspire more fans and drivers to appreciate different forms of motorsport and showcase the diversity and talent of the stock car racing community.
