Once you get a taste of the wild, nothing can stop you. Carson Hocevar, the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year, has always been known for his rowdy nature. From wrecking rival Corey Heim at the 2023 Craftsman Truck championship to fending off seasoned Cup Series veterans in 2024, Hocevar stops at nothing. Apparently, his penchant for aggression reflects even outside the racetrack.

Carson Hocevar just turned 22 on 28th January, and as per his NASCAR celebrity status, he had a blast. However, his birthday celebration entailed more than just parties and friends. He developed a taste for the wild even on his special day – and purchased something flaming hot.

The stats are all in the right place. Carson Hocevar jumped straight from Trucks to Cup in 2024 and showcased his prowess with ease. Driving the No. 77 Cup car for Spire Motorsports, he picked up 6 top-tens and 1 top-five, trumping even his veteran teammate Corey LaJoie. But alongside a remarkable resume, he also drummed up an icky reputation. Hocevar deliberately wrecked Harrison Burton during the last laps of the Nashville Superspeedway race. Now it is apparent that Hocevar’s taste for aggression expands beyond just wrecking rivals who get on her nerves.

For his 22nd birthday, Carson Hocevar wished for a special gift. He revealed the story of how he wound up with a fire-breathing instrument in a recent press conference. “I was like, I want something for my birthday… I wanna spend something, so I went on eBay. I was trying to find No.77, but the only number I could find was No. 7000. So I had No. 7000 of the ‘not a flamethrower.’ And I had a lot of fun with it… It’s literally a flamethrower. I asked if I could bring it in on stage and they said no.” After sending the media officials rolling with laughter, Carson Hocevar added another hilarious chapter of his story.

He shared the prequel to his birthday gift story, about how he was inspired to get a ‘not a flame thrower.’ After coming back from a race, he found an icy sight that needed to be melted. “My whole driveway was ice. I literally could not drive my Truck up it. That’s where a flamethrower started to figure out… I was trying to grab hammers to break it, that didn’t work. Then I started to rolling a lawnmower on it to dig into it, that didn’t work… Then I thought about getting a hairdryer… I need more heat. So then I got a flamer thrower. But it somehow didn’t come through, it got delayed, and all the ice melted. So for my birthday, I lit my birthday candles with the flame thrower.” Hocevar’s hilarious struggles led to a problem-solving purchase which turned into a birthday gift to himself. Let’s hope the 22-year-old breathes fire on the track as well, just not with his ‘not a flame thrower’.

His new gift proves Carson Hocevar’s penchant for the wild yet again. However, Hocevar may take it slow this season.

Stern advice from a veteran

Well, Carson Hocevar stirred up quite a controversy last year in Nashville. When the caution flag was waved in Nashville, Hocevar’s No. 77 spun out Harrison Burton‘s No. 21 Ford and did not stop before the latter completely spiraled. This aggression landed Hocevar a hefty $50,000 fine and a 25-point penalty from NASCAR. Criticism mounted against the angry young man, who takes things a bit too far. Jeff Burton, Harrison’s father and NBC Sports broadcaster, reacted sternly to the incident. However, the 21-time Cup Series race winner did not just react like an angry father, but he also responded in the strict tone of a mentor.

Jeff Burton has watched Carson Hocevar act similarly in other races and warned him about an impact on his own career’s future. “It’s just uncalled for. It’s just unnecessary. And Carson — this is the problem, if he can’t fix this, he will not be successful in the sport. They’re not going to let him be successful. I think people have been pretty patient with him… this offseason, that’s goal No. 1 for this young driver and his team — we’ve got to find a way to make pace. Look, if you wreck by yourself because you’re trying to make pace, go get you some. But you can’t be running into people over and over and over.”
