After his conversation on SiriusXM NASCAR radio on Wednesday, former Cup Series champion Joey Logano’s comments drew flak from the racing community. Taking the mic to discuss the “accessibility” of fans to the major personalities in elite sports, the Team Penske star expressed his opinion that NASCAR fans were spoilt in this regard. With several fans not particularly agreeing with him on different social media platforms, a stronger voice has now emerged to contradict him.

Cup Series newcomer and Spire Motorsports entrant Carson Hocevar has responded to Logano’s comments and voiced his difference of opinion.

One of Joey Logano’s key points in his latest appearance on SiriusXM was that racing fans could meet and take pictures with NASCAR drivers quite easily. Drawing comparisons to NFL, he said that it was nearly impossible for fans to meet an NFL star. In particular, his choice of words in mentioning that NASCAR fans were “spoilt” has been drawing much criticism. He also talked about how other drivers and himself tried their best to entertain fans’ requests and said, “To say that we are not accessible is wrong. That is not the case at all. We are very accessible.”

It is this thought that has irked the young Carson Hocevar the most. Replying to SiriusXM’s post, he hit back at Logano questioning, “Why do we pretend and act like we give fans the most access?” Going on to detail the areas in which he thought NASCAR falls short of appeasing the fans, he drew the verdict that the drivers ought to be doing a lot better. He wrote, “Our access is good, but not the best, and not full access to the average fan. And when we take notice of that we will able to make progress. Our fans are one of the most loyal fans, they should be treated as such.”

While Logano probably did not mean any disrespect to fans, Hocevar has picked a side and put the former champion on the other side of the fence in the process.

Though the race teams in NASCAR have been complaining for years about not turning a profit owing to the charter and media negotiations, it is no secret that the top crop of drivers in NASCAR are extremely well-paid for the craft. However, Joey Logano believes that drivers do not get the validation from fans that they should be getting for their efforts to be one amongst the rest.

In his own words, “When you think of racecar drivers that are staying in a motorhome, I don’t know, I feel like the racecar drivers that I know and get to know, they are normal folk. I mean there’s a couple of them that maybe live a little bigger lifestyle than others but the majority of them are normal racers.” Though he acknowledged that Cup drivers do get paid a “little” bit more and that changes a bit of their lifestyle “here and there,” he asserted that they were as easily accessible for any fan as racers from the lower rungs.

With Carson Hocevar now turning up the volume against Logano’s take with multiple tweets in response to the ones from fans, he has also mentioned in one that “Without [fans], I and everyone else have no job.” We are yet to see if more drivers jump into this conversation between the champion and the rookie. End of the day, let’s hope Hocevar doesn’t pick an enemy off the track even before he gets into his new Spire Motorsports Camaro.
