Carl Edwards last raced in NASCAR in 2016, so it has been nearly six years away from the sport for him. He recently spoke about the Next Gen car and the new regulations, and the 42-year-old weighed in on a potential return to the Cup Series. Of course, this is actually a pretty farfetched notion, but a man can dream.
He said, “Competitively speaking, if a person were to come back to the sport. The best time would be when everybody is scrambling to figure something out. I can tell you right now, I can be the slowest guy you’ve met. It’s a diminishing skillset that is interesting. I don’t know, from a team perspective, obviously I haven’t been in. There’s got to be difficulties that make people nervous. Any time you shake things up, like the Bristol dirt race or go to a new track, it shakes things up. It makes guys have to really work hard to figure it out.”

Of course, Edwards has insisted that he has no plans to race again. He is happily retired and enjoying life away from the track. Instead, he will be content with watching the NASCAR action from the comfort of his own home. He is admittedly quite excited for the Next Gen cars to take to the track for the first time.
Naturally, it will be disappointing that we won’t see Edwards perform his famous backflip. On the bright side though, he does have a ‘successor’ in the form of Daniel Hemric. This is because the newly crowned Xfinity Series champion also pulled off a backflip after taking his maiden win and title. For the 2022 season, Hemric will be sharing the Kaulig Racing Cup Series drive with AJ Allmendinger and Noah Gragson. Let us see how the 2022 season pans out.
