The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season had it all, from the underdog story to the on-track drama, late cautions, and new rivalries. However, there were stories of drivers who nearly missed out on wins or milestones, but one particular story that shadows them all has to be Martin Treux Jr’s disappointing year. Coming into the competition, he was considered one of the real contenders to win the series; however, he has to be content with a P11 finish in the overall championship points standings.

Having tasted the glory of the 2017 Cup Series title, a 2023 regular season champion is just a mediocre title, and that is not what No. 19 from Joe Gibbs Racing had in mind going into the season. Martin Truex Jr did claim three victories going into the playoffs, but this is where he couldn’t build on his good run. Going into the 2024 season, which could be his final dance, is there still hope for the veteran racer to reach the peak of NASCAR, or is he well past his glory days?

Ever since he made his move to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019, the driver has had two heartbreaks in finishing second in the championship standings (2019, 2021). The follow-up to the 2022 season was a nightmare, as Truex Jr was unable to register a single win and failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Thus, he had reached a breaking point, contemplating his next move.

However, he did return for the 2023 season with JGR. It was a fresh start for Truex Jr and it sure turned out to be a promising one for him. Notching up three wins, nine top-five, and 17 top-10 finishes, he looked dead set on his goal to claim the prized possession of NASCAR. However, in a major turn of events, No. 19 was somehow unable to maintain his good run of form and plummeted into a downward trajectory.

With just two top-10 finishes in the playoffs, Truex Jr bowed out of contention in the Round of 8, and thus the dream that looked so close for once was pushed beyond the reach of the veteran driver. Interestingly, the same was the theme with other JGR drivers, who, despite punching well above their weight, crumbled at the crucial moment. Christopher Bell made it to the finale but was marred by technical failures, while Denny Hamlin too followed a similar theme.

At 43, the driver sure has surpassed his prime years as a NASCAR driver. Although the three wins and a surprisingly good run did make the fans believe that he could script a famous win, that was not to be; not every driver has the makings of Harry Grant, who was able to win the championship at 52, but that era was different. Not to forget the young blood and prime contenders who are eager to etch their names into history books.

The likes of Kyle Larson, William Byron, Bubba Wallace, and Ross Chastain are geared up and have been consistent in their progress. Whereas, for Truex Jr, the inconsistent run and a rather over-reliance on his car have not graced him with the results he has been hoping for.
