The Daytona 500 Race is just around a week away and excitement levels are already soaring among fans. Beside general hype posts, a debate is astride on social media regarding car manufacturers. Speculative views are afloat on the internet about which manufacturer will grab the maximum victories in the great American race. As it turns out, the three top contenders- Chevrolet, Toyota, and Ford- have quite a battle on their hands.

Chevrolet has been the top performer for many years in a row. However, their consistent dominance may soon fizzle out. Ford and Toyota have recently stepped up their game by introducing new designs to their car bodies. Hence, the Daytona 500 this year is bound to be an interesting one.

In any battle, the old fighters are always difficult to topple. Chevrolet has maintained a continuous winning streak at the Daytona 500 for a whopping 12 years. In a recent post on Twitter, we see Trey Ryan tweeting about Chevrolet’s greatness. He said, “The last time Chevrolet was not on Pole for the Daytona 500 was 2012.”

However, as times change, old victors need to make way for the new generation. And we are strongly feeling the winds of change in the Daytona 500 this year. Both Ford Performance and Toyota Racing Development are entering this season with a revamped look.

Ford was the first to unveil its all-new Ford Mustang Dark Horse in November last year. It has a sleek, sharp profile, with the front end and side features exhibiting distinctive character lines. There is also a snazzy new nose on the front end.

Toyota also introduced its new baby, the Camry XE. Some features visible to the naked eye include a unique hammerhead styling on the front facia. The hood has new character lines and new hood duct exits. Further, the back facia has a revised quarter panel styling. Overall, its rounded profile resembles cars that are suited to speedways and drafting tracks.

With Ford and Toyota redefining and restyling their cars, the 2024 season may see a reversal of dominance on the track. However, what remains to be seen is how these new cars actually perform at the races.

In 2023, the NASCAR Cup Series consisted of several Chevrolet wins. But Ford and Toyota also caught up. Of the 36 races, Chevrolet snagged 18 victories, Toyota won 10, and Ford had 8. However, Chevrolet has lost some teams and drivers and their share of the grid has fallen. At the end of the 2023 season, it was a Ford driver, Ryan Blaney, who took home the checkered flag. Meanwhile, Toyota now has 8 charters for the Cup Series, which allows them a better pit strategy. This leaves Ford and Toyota with wide margins to clinch more wins this coming season.

The best product will come from a collaboration between technology and fieldwork. Richard Johns, Ford’s NASCAR performance leader, said, “One of the biggest things we gain in the sport is technology transfer between what we do in the production world and what we do in the race world.” He is also confident about 2024, “All of our metrics point to it being an improvement from last year and from 2022.”
