There are a few teams in NASCAR recognized for their legacy beyond the performance of their racers. Now, any racer who enters these teams is viewed as one of the winning contenders. This includes Petty Family’s Legacy Motor Club, Roger Penske’s Penske Racing and of course, Joe Gibbs’ JGR. Gibbs was a legendary NFL coach, leading the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl victories in the 1980s and early 1990s. Starting his NASCAR team a year before his NFL retirement in 1993, Gibbs built a powerhouse in the sport.

Joe Gibbs Racing quickly became one of the most successful teams in NASCAR history. With drivers like Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, and Denny Hamlin, JGR earned multiple championships and established a winning legacy. But the team’s newest driver and the owner’s grandson, Ty Gibbs, is now facing heightened scrutiny.

Ty Gibbs’ 2025 season is a wreck, literally!

Ty Gibbs’ 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season has gotten off to a tough start, with a series of disappointing performances. The season kicked off with the Clash at Bowman Gray, where Gibbs failed to qualify for the main event. His lackluster performance in the exhibition race set the tone for what would come in the Daytona 500. Here, he finished 16th, far from the competitive edge many expected.

The Ambetter Health 400, held at Atlanta Motor Speedway, was another letdown for Gibbs. After struggling throughout the race, Gibbs was involved in a multi-car pileup on lap 184. The Big One took him out of the race with a 32nd-place DNF. His lack of progress in these early events has drawn plenty of attention and raised concerns about his readiness for the top level of NASCAR competition.

The setbacks continued at the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix last week, where Gibbs finished 34th after a crash. This marks the third consecutive race where the 22-year-old has failed to perform to the level expected of him. The series of unfortunate events has certainly left fans questioning whether he’s truly ready to compete at the highest level. Overall, Ty has just 2 top-30 finishes in the last 8 races and only 7 top-10 finishes in the last 33 races, as pointed out by Austin Konenski. A worrying statistic for sure!

For Ty Gibbs, the mounting criticism and disappointing finishes continue to pile up. While the season is still young, it is becoming increasingly clear that Gibbs will need to make significant improvements if he hopes to salvage what remains of his 2025 season. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely, hoping that he can turn things around before the pressure gets even greater.

NASCAR community vocal with calls for Ty Gibbs to prove himself

As Ty Gibbs struggles through a challenging 2025 NASCAR season, fan reactions have been harsh. Many are questioning whether the young driver is truly ready for the Cup Series, especially given his family connections. One fan commented, “He needs to get out of the car that’s owned by his grandfather and feel what it’s really like to be driving for a job.” This sentiment reflects growing frustration with Gibbs’ underperformance, given his ride at Joe Gibbs Racing, one of the most successful teams in NASCAR.

Another fan pointed out the rarity of a winless streak in a driver’s early Cup Series career, saying, “Let’s say Ty Gibbs wins this week…Do you know which drivers got their first Cup Series win in their 91st Cup Series start?” This cheeky comment highlights that while Gibbs has shown promise in the past, he still lacks the breakthrough victory that many hope will solidify his place in the sport.

The criticisms have continued with humor, such as “Grandpa to the rescue” meme, suggesting that Ty’s success is largely due to his grandfather’s team rather than his own talent. Another pointed out, “Damn, the silver spoon isn’t working out for coach,” a reference to Gibbs’ privileged position in the sport thanks to his family’s wealth and connections.

Many fans have labeled Gibbs as a “bust” and expressed disappointment with his results. “He’s a bust” is a common refrain as expectations for the driver have consistently fallen short of reality. Some even attributed his struggles to nepotism, with one comment reading, “Almost like nepotism doesn’t work!”

Finally, one fan made an intriguing comparison to Hailie Deegan, another young driver who moved from NASCAR to open-wheel racing. “He’s the midget version of @HailieDeegan…” they remarked. This comment ties Gibbs’ early struggles to Deegan’s own transition in racing, which came after a NASCAR career that never fully lived up to expectations. Deegan’s recent shift to Indy NXT after facing similar criticism in NASCAR adds weight to the fan’s comparison.

Whether Ty Gibbs can turn things around or face a similar crossroads like Deegan remains to be seen.
