The Daytona 500 is one of the most iconic events on the NASCAR calendar. Marked as the season opener since its inception, the event has held a massive significance for both the fans and the drivers. But winning this race is certainly not easy.

However, for Bubba Wallace, winning the 500 would be more than an achievement in his record books. It would become a part of history and be remembered for generations to come. During a recent interview, Wallace was asked about his expectation from the race, considering he had finished second last year.

Responding to the query, Wallace mentioned, “Daytona is such a crapshoot, for a lack of a better word. You never know what to expect. It takes a full team effort from myself, spotter, and crew chief to make sure we are there at the end to give ourselves a chance to win and survive all of the wrecks. If we can finish one spot better this year, that would be great.”

He isn’t wrong, as at the end of the day, everything falls down to luck. Other drivers have also previously mentioned how this event is all about lady luck and does not involve much skill from the driver itself.

Throughout history, NASCAR has been a sport mostly dominated by a single demographic. However, it was minorities like Danica Patrick and Bubba Wallace that changed the game a bit for the general audience.

When Patrick was present in the sport, she instilled the spirit of NASCAR into several young women. Who then, later on, grew up to become like Patrick themselves, racing across various disciplines. But with Wallace, things are even bigger. It is almost as if the sport needs him more than he requires to be in the sport.

According to NBC NASCAR announcer Kyle Petty, “Bubba is important to the sport.” He also mentioned that it “does not matter if he wins or is competitive.” At the end of the day, Wallace just has to be in the races. The former Cup Series driver also said that Wallace’s mere presence, “means so much to the African American community.”
